what heads would be best for a 383 stroker
I am a high performance engine machinist student at NTC in Bemidji MN. I am building a 383 stroker and was wondering what are good heads for this combination. Preferably a good head that doesn't cost a lot of money would be ideal.

wll you need a few more details..what type camshaft are you going to run..fuel you plan on running...what type of lift are you look to use...aluminum or cast iron heads..rocker arm type..
Re: what heads would be best for a 383 stroker
For premimum unleaded pump gas (92 octane) find a head with a 70 to 72cc chamber.
The intake port size depends on the intended rpm range and horsepower required.
I suggest a intake port volume of 195 to 210 cc for a strong High perf street strip 383.
if you want out of the box best power the CNC ported heads make the most out of the box power.
EG AFR 195 or AFR 210 Eliminators. Ya get what you pay for.
Out of the box as cast heads that make good power and get even better with hand porting.
Or added CNC porting.
Brodix IK200 Profiler 23deg 195cc or 210cc
Dart Pro I aluminum 200cc or 215cc
Lots of similar cast iron head choices. EG GMPP Bowtie Vortec 185 or 225cc port volume versions.
The cheapest low $$ Chinese-off shore cast head may have questionable casting/machining/hard parts quality.
and the as cast ports are not as good. Often needed rework, porting and preparation to get them ready.
Best bought bare or from a head porter shop.
10.50:1cr works very well on premimum pump gas. 11:1+ is more often than not too much compression.
One of the most common errors is building with too high a compression ratio for the intended fuel octane.

If you are on a budget the Speier Racing Heads V2.5BI heads can't be beat. They are an import casting but come cnc'd and fully prepped from Speier Racing for $1600. For more power you can step up to the Speier cnc Profiler castings. I wouldn't run any other 23º head. http://www.vfactorracingheads.com/vfact ... -bore.html
In fact, I'm using a set of the V2.35PF's on my own personal 385 inch small block right now.

Re: what heads would be best for a 383 stroker
what will this engine be used for?
how much rpm?
type of cam?
what intake?
a good budget casting would be the Dart SHP, plenty of meat for port work.
Chads heads will be way better then any cookie cutter cnc stuff.

Re: what heads would be best for a 383 stroker
I am using chads v2.5bi import heads. Mine are on 405 ci sb in a heavy, poorly geared one ton truck. My cam has lazy outdated lobes, tightish converter, hurricane manifold, 10.6cr ... Thing is a beast from bottom through top. I was worried the heads would be too big for my application, but chad assured me they would work great.. And they do. My only concern would be using them in a application like mine with limited off the shelf header selection. The exhaust ports are a little wide for std exhaust bolt pattern IMO. I used dynatech stahl pattern adapters and re-flanged my 1.75 headers to allow for a nice transition and more sealing area. No regrets, in fact I will use stahl pattern from now on rather it's needed or not

Re: what heads would be best for a 383 stroker
i recently built an engine using the same rotating kit you have except with a 5.7 rod. I used the DART SHP heads. The 200cc heads with the 64cc chamber. It gives around 11.5 CR if i remeber correctly. They are not exspensive heads. The car has run 11.9 at 110 mph. It will go faster. I'm happy with the heads. Its not super big power but decent.

Re: what heads would be best for a 383 stroker
I am doing a similar 383 project (3000-7000 rpm 550-600 HP engine) getting ready to buy some heads and I just got off the phone with Jason Collins one of the owners at Pro Maxx Performance and he said if I could hold off for about 4 weeks they had a cnc program coming out of development that would be in production in February with there 225 cc runner casting after cnc'd they flow 310 cc's at .650 lift. they will sale for $1395 with titanium retainers springs valves and locks. With the 225 cc runners the port velocity will be down a little in the torq #'s in the lower rpms depending on what your build requires. They do sound like a good alternative to some $2000.00 and up AFR 225's

Need heads? Talk to Chad!!!! I have a set of his heads on my 11-1 383, 10.75@124.@ 3100 lbs.

Chad Speier, Speier Racing Heads. Baddest ass 23º stuff you will find anywhere. Actually, everything he does is bad assgvx wrote:Who's Chad????redliner wrote:Need heads? Talk to Chad!!!!
Here is the intake on our Pro-Port Pontiac
Here is the intake port on the American made Profiler core SRH V2.35's which are for my own 383 build I'm doing right now
and the chamber of the profiler head............

Here is the roof of the SRH V2.35 (the head is upside down for a better photo)

Profiler 23 * stuff. Pick what you need for your flow needs 185--195--210. If ya gonna do work to them start out 10cc smaller than where ya want to end up.

Re: what heads would be best for a 383 stroker
your head has to work with your cam and rocker ratios and compression
work with your camgrinder before buying heads and vice verse
go here and pick a category then fill out the appropriate form street- drag etc
post back here any info not covered already
Jones will know which cam and rocker ratios work best with which head and compression (converter, gears, weight etc)
pay for the advice by buying an appropriate cam from him
Chad is also a good choice

Re: what heads would be best for a 383 stroker
Cast crank, i'd keep it under 7k rpm. Max power up to that point i think a afr 210, profiler 210, chads small port 205 or other similar heads would give you best bang for buck. Chads profilers are more $ but a better head with all custom components for your build
