Inexpensive 350 Build

Post by vortecpro »

My son built this inexpensive 350 and I thought it might be of interest seeing it will be run in the car at the track soon. Here's what he built, he started off with 1 piece 350 roller block 638 casting, used 4 valve relief hyperutectic flat top pistons, stock GM O rods, factory 3.480 stroke crank with a Comp hyd roller cam .502 lift 224/230/110. L98 heads were used with a 2.003 intake valve and 1.50 exhaust, the intake is a Performer RPM air gap. Factory GM 4 quart pan. The track test should be interesting! Some pictures

Sounds very interesting. There’s nothing better than a drag test. To bad they’re not as popular to share as engine dyno testing.

Can you tell us a little bit about the test car ? And where you race ?

What ring package - 1.5/1.5/3, like the later L31 used?

What is better is a dyno/drag test, and we have both here, not fancy parts here, but data to share no matter the results.

The car is a mid 80s Camaro raced @ 475 feet elevation, dyno tested @ 900 feet elevation. The car has a T350 with 4.56 gears, 9 inch slick, around 3200 pounds race ready. All testing will be done @ Xtreme Raceway. More pictures

Silvolite makes one with metric ring pack as well, similar price. I used a set recently. Plus they are 1.560 Comp height.

Vortec pro:
Mahla 224-3497
Quality Piston with desirable ring pack to be had for less than $300 w/Rings.

That would be the way to go if they made them in oversizes. Thanks

224-3497.030

But I don't see the point in that, since the 2mm top ring is .0787" (metric version of 5/64")..

The Mahle piston is lighter than the H345 piston we used. We did take 17 grams out of the O rods, we also did some work to the crank.

Very similar to my 1st roller cammed 350 (same XR276HR). Same pistons. Vortec heads rather than the L98's. Compression came in at 10:1 with the piston .030" down and a .026" gasket. The Vortecs had .006" taken off to true them up.
Also in a mid 80's Camaro.

Dynojet said 280/282 HP/TQ. 700R4 in drive with an aftermarket 10" converter.

Best pass in full street trim other than ET Streets. 3.73 rear gear. 3600 lbs w/driver. August 2011:
630’, 73.4F°/23C°, 29.83” Hg/101.02 kPa, 65% rh
DA: 2046’
12.75 @ 105.93, 8.082 @ 83.39, 1.74 60’
12.449 @ 108.551 MPH corrected

I trust you'll be considerably quicker than that!
Watching with interest

Rings should be:

These are made in oversizes. You just add .020, .030, .040 after the p/n. I bought my set from Autoplicity.

I literally have the same budget 350 concept as you and a few others. The irony of this is I tried to call you a year or so ago due to your name to talk with you about Vortec heads. You called back but I was already working at that time. Keep us updated on your project!

What is the advantage of a 2mm (.078") top ring over a 5/64" (.078") top ring?

The L31-type pistons are 1.5/1.5/3mm, same as the LS. Less friction, less heat, less wear, better sealing.
