4140 air vent to lid clearance
While I work out intake manifolds/ clearance on another thread - another question , my current drop down air cleaner leaves a gap from the top of the carb front air vent to the lid of 7/8" , the rear is 1 1/4" so no issue. I could get get more hood clearance if I drop down further but how close can you get the lid to the top of the front air vent before you cause an issue?

At least a 1/2" ... unless that gets the lid to close to the carb air inlet at the choke tower.als427 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 9:27 am While I work out intake manifolds/ clearance on another thread - another question , my current drop down air cleaner leaves a gap from the top of the carb front air vent to the lid of 7/8" , the rear is 1 1/4" so no issue. As Walter said, 'about' 1/2"... as long as the vent tube is still cut slantwise. I've run into a couple of cars where owners cut the slanted part off because the air cleaner top hit it and made a dent in the shiny surface.
Re: 4140 air vent to lid clearance
ok , so ive got 7/8 - can lower another 1/4 no problem.
why is the front vent tube taller than the rear?

This is the factory air breather Chevrolet used around 1969 to 1971 that will likely give you the most hood clearance . The base is not like any aftermarket, look at how it is sculpted . The lid is shaped to work with the base for vent clearance ( slant cut vents). You can see in the picture that the base was meant for a factory carb or early aftermarket Holley (tabs) and would require modifications for later Holley's. The carb pictured is for a LS6 Corvette.
This is the air breather I use on my big block with a Victor Jr style intake.

There are other sites who also sell this , mostly for restoration. It has a 2 inch drop. was used on 1967 - 1969 Z\28 and high horse big blocks such as 1969 396/375 hp and 427/425 hp.
I wouldn't buy the base only, as the lid is formed for vent clearance ( with slant cut ).
Also did you know the 850 Holley has a lower choke horn such as List 80531, about 3/8" lower pictured bow.

It does look lower 3/8 would help. But I thonk an 850cfm would be oversized for my 427 bbc - should be nearer 750 max unfortunately
