performer or rpm intake choice on this cam please

Post by als427 »

Hi all , finally sorting my 2nd gen camaro with bbc 427.10:1 4 speed stick , 3.34 r/end.oval iron heads mild polish port. Stock valves 2.06/1.72.Putting in a HFT bullit cam 276/285 110lsa ( 221/226@50 - downsizing from 230/235 114lsa). Want off idle to 6k performance , mostly causing low rpm and pulling hard to 6k for fun.Have both a used performer and new performer rpm here , recommendatios for my application welcome.

It’s kinda a toss up to me.

But if you have a carb bigger then 750 and can fit a 1” spacer under it then I would lean to the Performer.

their description says the RPM has about 3/8" higher carb pad and won't fit 67-81 Camaro, do you have scoop or lump in the hood? my expeirence on a 1970 model with the 569 factory rectangle port manifold showed maybe a 1/2" hood clearance with the stock open element Chevy air cleaner which is a deep drop type

Hi , have air cleaner with lid. 750 vac 2nds.Have a small cowl ( custom fabricated) can just fit the perf rpm.Just. Will look at new body bushings maybe with a small shim to help this along. If I fit the performer would have to have 4150 straight on top. Not enough hood clearance for a 1" spacer , maybe a 3/8 on a good day - if such a thing exists .

I would use the shorter manifold and fit the heat insulating shield spacer like came on Chevelles-don't know if Camaros used them, iron heads would concern me with modern gasoline, what climate are you in?

Regarding clearance, what air filter do you have? Maybe something as deep as the as the one pictured below would open up your options. (If you're not using something similar already)

For best performance of that type, if weight is not an issue ...
find a 60's cast iron O.E.M. intake manifold; The high rise kind, not the low ones of the 70's.

RPM Performer all the way. In my testing back in the 90's when the RPM came out it was 3 tenths quicker and 2 mph faster then a Performer 2.0 that had the port opening matched to a 781 BBC head.

I would use the Perf. If it was a 454 or larger maybe the RPM.
