Re: Home ported sbc 441 heads
These should be the Gaterman lifters. Not the Morel street series lifters. I like Marks suggestion on increasing the seat pressure and therefore letting the open pressure fall where they may. I think it will be happier on the top end

I don't have a spring tester but if this springs are what PAC says they are I should have 140-145 installed height pressure and 388 for my max lift. Gaterman states you can use higher pressures but at a possible loss of longevity.F-BIRD'88 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 14, 2023 6:43 pmWhat is the actual seat and open spring force?6.50camaro wrote: ↑Tue Nov 14, 2023 6:17 pmHoward Max Effort 91160 Competition Products catalog states - 130 to 180 seat pressure 385 open pressure up to 7000rpm.
Install and lashed as per instruction with lifters.
Excessive spring force (with those lifters ) (assuming all are on spec leakdown) may be causing lifter collapse at high rpm. May find benefit in adjusting spring force and verifying lifter bleed down rate on each.
How would you go about verifying leak down rate?

Re: Home ported sbc 441 heads
That is correct on which lifters they are.
I do have another set of PAC springs that are about 25 lbs more force both seat and open and have clearance to shim to 180 lbs on the seat without worrying about coil bind issues.
Re: Home ported sbc 441 heads
This right here why a 3000 pound + Super Stock can run under 10 seconds, it not that 557 HP is crazy amount of power, its where IT makes power, allowing more gear, and more converter to accelerate the car. I would also guess this is run 9000 RPM in the lights.

Advise simply move on to the solid roller cam you got with appropriate racing valve springs.
Call it good.
It is what it is.

Re: Home ported sbc 441 heads
That is the possible eventual goal. With a couple months off for the off season I could do a lot. I much prefer to A to B testing Not A to B,C,D,E test. My thoughts at this point are dump the break in oil use good Quality oil with anti-foaming agents. timing and jetting testing along with suspension tuning for the lower power level of this engine over the previous 422 engine. Then
1. go to 1.5 rockers
2. stiffer springs
3. solid lifters
4 single plane intake
This is all if I leave this engine in to next season. As this was really just to get this motor broke in and establish a baseline for the 441 heads. I have a new .060 over 350 12.5 to 1 comp. full solid roller, Promaxx 225 cnc ported heads with 5 different single plane intakes that sitting on an engine stand that I would like to Break in and Baseline . $ years ago I had a similar engine to this one that went 6.73 in the 1/8th be fore de tuning to run 7.00 index . It was basically the same combo only with reed ported 292 heads and it lost a head on an exhaust valve before I could really TnT the engine to its full potential. I have some time to ponder my next move

While we may not be pitted right next to each other this forum is the next best thing to be able to bounce ideas off each other.
as I really don't have anyone close to where I'm living to do this with. Dan

Re: Home ported sbc 441 heads
Finally got a good Saturday for a TNT the only problem was I screwed up loading the car into the trailer. Poked a hole in the side wall of the right side front tire. Backed the car out, dismounted the tire, put a patch in it, remount test held pressure overnight. Off to the track I go. Make a good clean pass. Driving back up the return rode I feel the car pulling to the right. Get to the trailer and the tire is just about on the rim. grab the air tank pump it back up and load it back on the trailer. Flat again be the time I get it in.
The pass I made was as follows 60'- 1.538 330'- 4.721 1/8- 7.383 mph 92.73 1000'- 7.383 1/4 -11.630@115.53. This is the first full 1/4 pass I've made since around 1977 or 8. Ever things been 1/8 mile bracket or index and geared for the 1/8, since I built this car 12 years ago.
The changes made over the off season were. took off the 1.65 in and 1.6 ex rockers went to 1.5 on both. shimmed the valve springs .030 for a
little more seat pressure. Changed the break in oil for 10w30 synthetic went up 2 jet sizes front and back. reset timing to 34* total adv. Loosen the front shock to 1 click from full loose. Loosened the rebound on the rear shocks 2 clicks. tried 13.5 psi in the slicks I don't like how they looked will go back to 13 psi .
Mad at myself for the dumb mistake loading the car. But this 65 year old 40 lbs. over weight body doesn't like climbing in and out the driver side window as much as it used to. Tried to get a little more room on that side of the trailer to climb in and out of. Hit a sharp corner on the right side wheel well. live and learn. new tire already ordered.

Re: Home ported sbc 441 heads
If y'all remember I was having a problem with the valve train not being happy above 6300 rpm. I'm happy to report that I shifted 1-2 at 6500 2-3 at 6400 and crossed the stripe at around 6600 rpm didn't really look at the tach but the 6400 shift lite came on just around the 1000' mark and I just kept my foot in it. I didn't hear any complaints from the valvetrain. That was a big plus for the day.

Put that cam on a 106°LCA and I bet the car goes 7.00 and 11.30's6.50camaro wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2024 7:59 pm Finally got a good Saturday for a TNT the only problem was I screwed up loading the car into the trailer. Re: Home ported sbc 441 heads
They do have decent potential. We had old set in 90s that were welded, brazed and epoxied up. We had 4.070x 3.00 stroke. We had to run solid flat tappet deal with stud rockers. We had old crower 00351 cam and trend lite lifters or schubecks some also. That engine was dyno tested several times and made 530s back then with good 750 superstock legal carb. It ran 6.60s back then with chrysler plated 4 speed. 3.09 low and 6.20 rear. Car was 3220ish.vortecpro wrote: ↑Sat Nov 18, 2023 4:20 pmThis right here why a 3000 pound + Super Stock can run under 10 seconds, it not that 557 HP is crazy amount of power, its where IT makes power, allowing more gear, and more converter to accelerate the car.
