Speedmaster block Quality in 2023

Post by Mpcoluv »

Guys,
I know speedmaster hired one of the Edelbrock engineers a while back. Are their blocks now usable?

If this is the one I'm thinking of, Speedmaster lied about hiring him. Guy said as much. I think he consulted on something, but was never an employee or did anything for them long term. It's in a thread here somewhere. Can't point you to it though without searching.

Makes me really not want to use anything of theirs. If they will lie about this what does that say?

I will use only a few things from them ... nothing with moving parts.

Customer brought me all the parts to build two marine engines. Speedmaster rods, same part number, 40 grams difference from set to set. I refuse to use anything from them.

Even if the block ain’t moving by itslef I would never consider one. I once did, but after figuring out all the issues…

But you never know, everyone can change into something better- or worse.

I think he means stuff like spacers, block off plates or bits n pieces. Things they can't screw up too bad or is easily fixed. I'd only used thier block if i was a machinist and had plenty of free time, for my own personal use.

I've used camshafts timing covers and valves from them with no problems. Cams were hydraulic roller.

It’s hit or miss. I have thrown away timing covers where holes were off so bad they could not stop leaking. I have used intakes knowing I would have to true up surfaces. Have had luck with stainless shaft rockers after fixing the stands. Also trashed some that were too screwed up to fix. A friend brought me one of their carbs, all I can say was wow! I pieced one out of shelf junk I had. I plan on making it work but there was no hope with its original boosters. I will use stuff from them when I am ready to fix it to use and even with the fix time and cost I will come out on top. Heads are hit and miss. Have had issues with the seats flaking apart, valve guides wearing out quickly even when rocker geometry was checked. I have used many of their carb spacers and will again.

I recently picked up their double adjustable pushrod length checker. It looked like a nice piece with a super wide adjustment range. Turns out it was .040 off.

I set the length to match a pushrod with a 12” caliper. So checker and pushrod both measure the same oal. Actual pushrod had .040 more preload. Only thing I can figure is the ball end radius has to be different where it actually sits in cup.

Their stuff is under engineered. If you have the patience to work round it, then fine.

I don’t go to Taco Bell and order fillet minion and complain when it tastes like a chalupa. Sadly marketing has convinced the low buck or uneducated that they can have top notch stuff for peanut.

They can't even get a set of valve covers to fit without reaming out at least one hole. After 20 years of them selling junk, you would think people would learn.
