Dented (to clear the valve train) factory sheetmetal covers look tuff.
Ignorance leads to confidence more often than knowledge does.
Nah, I'm not leaving myself out of the ignorant brigade....at times.

its a "numbers matching Engine" as far as Engine parts,
but its not going to be a "numbers matching" Car

by coincidence, Chris is actually in the process of assembling the Engine today when i called !

( not a 350cid )
BES # 186 castings
its a 302cid Z28 Engine original Cross-Ram Intake Manifold with 2 Holley Carbs numbers matching
however, Chris is going to use 2 new EFI Holley Carbs instead , along with new Hydraulic Roller Cam,
the 1968 Camaro Z28 4-Speed manual trans will be a Street driven Car , Chris already has changed rear gears to 3.73 ratio
... Chris said its taken a long time to get this far with this Car restoration ! longer than he expected !
this is not the 1969 Camaro Z28 Cross-Ram Manifold version that Chris at C & S Performance is restoring ,
instead this is another 1969 Camaro Z28 Single-Holley Carb numbers-matching that Woody Gary just emailed me .

2nd round of class when I had the HP hit on my combination. I went 1.21 under the B/SA
index . I was extremely late on the starting line with a .121 reaction and Mustang had a
good light. I was catching him and closed the gap up to 2' at the end. Didn't think I was
going to hit the HP. I left Gainesville dejected LOL.."

awesome great Pictures .... Thanks for Posting !!!

Chris likes to use +0.100" Longer Intake and Exhaust Valves
i forgot to measure the Valve lengths when i Flow tested the Heads
.... so maybe +0.100" longer valves , along with Roller Rockers which are 1.60/1.60 Ratios , instead of 1.5/1.5,
made it very hard to fit or find a Valve Cover that can fit .
Chris is using a Hydraulic Roller in that engine .

Another factor is : they probably want to keep original Z28 302 Valve Covers
exactly like OEM shape , and also those 302 OEM Covers would never clear
+0.100" longer valves , along with Roller Rockers .

They probably also do not want to do anything to the Z28 OEM Cross-Ram Manifold either !

Once i get some Engine Pics , i'll post them
Larry;

If memory serves, stacking two of the double-thick valve cover gaskets on each side raises the valve covers up considerably--whereas the OEM replacement style Fel-Pro 17930 gaskets are only .156" thick (each), the Edelbrock 7548's are .250" thick (each) and the Fel-Pro 1604's are .313" thick (each).

I have T&D shaft rockers on my 302 (the one you re-did the heads on for me that I still need to get back to the dyno again after the Jesel belt drive failure!), and OEM early "script" stock stamped steel valve covers (such as were used on a `67 Z28) almost clear with stacked extra-thick gaskets.

If one really had their heart set on running stock cast `69 Z28 valve covers with roller rockers, etc., it might actually be do-able with enough gaskets stacked under them lol. :)

As far as any mods to the reproduction crossram intake itself, the only modification I had to make was enlarging the relief at the rear China rail to clear the port for the oil pressure sending unit. The reproduction intake had a bit too much material there and had to be relieved to clear. Other than that, it required absolutely no modifications.

It's possible to fit Ultra Pro Magnum rockers under the stock Z28 cover with a single .187" gasket...it just takes a bunch of work.. And the only gasket I found to fit the cast cover properly is the MR Gasket 5860.

Chris did the very same thing with the Valve Cover gasket before i could tell him what you said !

he also had to mill for clearance on the custom new Valve Covers , to clear the Cross-Ram Manifold Runners
says he has Jesel Rockers on this Engine

Shaft rockers would be nice, but I had to deal with leaving the drippers in place for these covers as they are '71-72' specific, and customer paid $1k for them.
I milled the rocker rail to make them flat for a good seal and to prevent any odd forces on the covers doing damage to them.

Interesting for sure on the head flow of a 461X head, I've owned 2 sets and sold them both for some good $$$ as guy thought they were the hot ticket for their cars. I know a few people back in the day that were running the X heads on their encono-dragsters, they made great power with them, most likely after porting.

I just have a curious question about the cylinder head intake entrance and why is it built up with clay the way you all do it.What is it’s purpose because I’ve never seen a intake manifold exit that looks like that. Thanks

So Larry I know you will appreciate this. This would be the Edelbrock that would replace the 041. This set is for a 350/300hp combo.

While I appreciate the purest, the aluminum head is bigger in volume to be legal.

I suppose your not allowed to use the W shaped or finned intake port floor. Would be a cool way to have fun with the port while complying with the cc rules.

It made 530 torque but peaked early like 6900.

Just couldn't get enough area. I wanted to try it so I did it on mine.
