Anyone happen to have a single J302 ford head laying around they want to get rid of?

You might want to try asking over at the Vintage Mustang forum.

Is this for a numbers-matching restoration? IIRC, the '68-only J head is the same as the '66 4-bbl head, just different casting number (C8ZE prefix).

IIRC, the J302 was an aluminum head from the SVO catalog. Late 80's early 90's.

"Quality" is like buying oats. You can pay a fair price for it and get some good quality oats,
or you can get it a hell of a lot cheaper, when it's already been through the horse.

Hi Mummert,
Surprised to see the interest!
I’ve run these since I got them from Alan Root 1986 (?) on a D1ZE Boss 302.
Would love to discuss, esp your appraisal of the combustion chamber of the AR/J302.

The J -302 heads are not very good performers by today's standards. They would only flow about 250cfm on the intake side after porting and 210 on the exhaust. The short turn was too flat. They did have a core shift problem in the exhaust after the initial casting run, and were replaced with the K-302 and a 2.020 intake valve. I ported several sets for the 5.0 HO crowd back in the day, and the TFS/KPI head was so much better that the J-302 fell out of favor and went away. Joe-71

Finally sorted out my recollection. In 1968 only, there was a J-code 4-bbl engine with C8OE-F heads. They have 53.5cc chambers and came on 1968 Shelby GT350 J Code engines. They never came on anything but these and a few 68 Mustangs and are rare because the more common '68 4v heads have bigger chambers. So, not J302 heads, but heads from a J-code 302" engine.

Yes, that is what I was thinking when I suggested VMF as a resource. J code in 1968 was the 302 4v.

Like has been stated The J head is not super trick by todays standards. But many times there are projects that don't require it. The stock 289 heads are 500hp capable. So tons of tricks are not neccesary for a street car.. The old shock tower cars were a rolling disaster, horrible geometry bad flexing issues. Just getting some weight off the front end helps.

The chamber has similar problems to the original heads, and would require same kinds of fixes.

I find it somewhat comical when people discuss production heads and their short comings. My friend had a 289 with 219 peak CFM @ 28 inches, 1.780 intake valve and 1.450 ex, no chamber work, flattop piston topped with a motor craft 4bbl, somehow this made 469 HP @ 7300 RPM and ran 10.29 @ 3150.

There are always exceptions to the rule. I'm sure the engine made that power DESPITE having the factory heads... not BECAUSE it had them. With something better, I'm sure it would have made a LOT more. Plus, the combo was likely Super Stock, where it turned a billion RPM and every part in the engine was optimized to using those heads. GOOD JOB on him for making those heads work, but pretending the engine made that power because of the heads... or that those heads would make big/comparable power in a different application is misleading.

The point is, not everything on a engine has to be aftermarket, its nice to utilize production parts in some instances. I will always maximize a production part before I move to a aftermarket part, just my way of thinking.
