Why is there a hole next to the choke tower in Holley carbs?

Post by plovett »

This almost seems like a silly question. It's just that I've never noticed this before. There is small, approximately 1/4" diameter oval shaped hole outside of the choke tower on the passenger of both my Holley 850 double pumper and my Holley 600 vacuum secondary carb.

It looks like it would pull unfiltered air in from the underside of the air cleaner. What is the purpose of this and should it be left open?

Thanks in advance,

paulie

If you actually have a choke ... that is where the actuating rod goes from the choke mechanism to the choke olate.

Ahhh, I don't use chokes. Should the hole be sealed up?

Thanks,

Typically the factory 850 Non-choke carbs use a small rectangular piece of brass to go under the hole and seal the hole. You can make a piece out of anything, plastic, wood, etc and then use some two part epoxy actually at the hole to seal the hole.

You do not want to leave the hole open to allow unfiltered air to the engine

Thanks! I had a feeling it should be sealed up, but I wasn't sure.

Holley uses an 1/8" thick piece of brass strap , 3/4" x 7/16" to go under the hole.
Aluminum works just fine.

I figured there might be somebody young and new here who might be wondering that same thing BECAUSE it was answered a long time ago.

Splooge a dollop of silicone sealant in the hole so it is a little bit larger than the hole on both top and bottom, and when it cures it isn't going anywhere, particularly if you clean the area with chlorinated brake clean beforehand you will have a hard time removing it.
