Easiest Way To Pull Press-in Rocker Studs W/O Special Puller

Post by coollx »

I need to pull a few press-in rocker studs on an old set of heads that have gotten pretty grooved by the rocker arms over the years.

I'd prefer not to buy a special puller if I don't have to since most everything I work on has screw-in studs.

Just wondering what methods others have successfully used to do this w/o a puller?

Does tightening down a nut on a stack of washers or washers with a socket work? Does heating the stud boss on the head first help?

Thanks.

Forget the heat.
Spacers of washers work fine.

If you keep them as pressed in studs be sure to drill and pin them with roll pins to keep them from moving.

All of the pressed studs I know of are 5.16 so watch to not put too much spring pressures or too big of cams in them.

One thing, when you use the stack of washers and nut method:

DO NOT USE AN IMPACT.

You want to use a breaker bar or ratchet. If you use an impact you will crack the heads.

Trust me. :(

The washers wor, but you can buy a puller for just a few bucks on eBay too.

If you're a typical homeowner, a short piece of 3/4" water pipe from your 'possibles' pile and a big washer works fine, at zero cost and 10 minutes of hacksawing.

You need something stout under the nut, rocker balls are perfect.
A good nut like off a rodbolt will be beneficial to.

When you experience how tight they are in there, you'll understand why they don't pull out in operation.

Agreed. Rocker balls and rod nuts for the budget win.
