I had a guy bring a cam card to me from Erson. He wanted to know if it was a hydraulic or solid cam and what the rpm range would be.

I looked at it, saw the .000/.000 on valve lash, checked the durations and told him it was a hydraulic cam and that it would peak at around 4500-5000 on his 350 SBC.

He took the cam card back, looked at the lift (around .450") and said...

"Now with .450" lift, is that a 3/4 race cam?"

I didn't know where to start, so I just told him no.

Ask them why they only want to run three fourths of a race and not the whole race. See what kind of a look they give you.

Use to when customers would ask me to number their rods I would sometimes ask them if they wanted me to put a line under #9 so they wouldn't get it mixid up with #6.
:? Know what? Almost all would answer ...Yes.

When someone asks me if I can make them a 3/4 race cam, I say
"Sure. Do you want me to cut the front 25% off, or the back 25%?"

I remember being a 16 year old kid at the Vo-tech school and all of us motor heads talking about the day when we could afford to get a 3/4 cam for our cars. Then one Monday morning one of the guys announced to the group that his brother just installed a 4 degrees over full cam in his 327. Man we were all heart broken knowing that we could never obtain that level of camshaftdom in our engines.

Back when I had just started work at a gas station and knew NOTHING about engines, the grizzled veteran I worked with (he had been there for a whole YEAR), told me that a hi-po engine had a 3/4 cam, hi-domed pistons, and shorty rods.

As teenagers with thoughts of hot rods and reading magazines,
We all thought a 30/30 cam was full race and a 3/4 was a little smaller.

Really, I've never seen one listed.
Could you show me one?

I walked into Lunati in 1973 and asked Dale Browning for a 3/4 cam for my 352. He said he didn't know what one was. I thought what is this guy doing selling cams!!!
