Dart block (SBC) oil pan

Post by dragrcr71 »

Couple of questions about the Dart blocks.
Where is the dipstick on the SHP and Little M blocks?
Does the standard Moroso, Milodon oil pan work on these blocks?

My SHP is on the passenger side, and uses a pan for a early 80's 2 piece rear seal block. There really isn't alot of options for pan on these. Its kind of a bummer. Cant help on the little M.

That's what I was afraid of. I have a driver's side dipstick block that needs a new pan. Trying to buy something that's upgrade proof that won't break the bank.

Whats worse is the stud kit for a windage tray on a 350 main doesn't work with this block. I could use the studs for the small journal stuff, but all it does is shorten the shank, and pull the windage tray closer to the crank. I will be calling to ARP tomorrow afternoon to try and resolve this. I talked to them on Wednesday last week briefly, but there computers were shut down for the end of the year. I would definately like to resuse my stud mounted windage tray. I'll let you know.

Like was said above the SHP block has the passenger side dipstick. There are a few pans available with 4, 5, 6 and 7 quart capacity that won't break the bank. Of course for a few dollars more there are companies such as Canton and others who have pans that will work. You just have to make sure these will clear your k-member etc.

Never on a pan. They are not that much to replace unless you are talking custom. :)

Jake, check the 400 studs.

I have a Moroso Stroker Pan on my motor and it has the dipstick in the pan. You could use this kind of pan and plug the hole in the block.
My pan was $183...

You would just have to make sure it fits your Chassis.

Thanks. Hadn't heard that about the stud kit. Have to keep that one in mind. Let me know what you find out.

What do you use for a dipstick with that stroker pan? Isn't that difficult feeding it up through the headers?

I have Fenderwell headers and it works easily. I think it would with most headers. The Dipstick comes with the pan! Suppose to be a Cut to length but I left mine the full length and just recorded where it is full at, for my reference.

If the dipstick is in the pan yes but the boss is in the block on the pass side.

Well I spent quite awhile on the phone with ARP today. Adam, the 400 stud is 4.250, the same as the 350 stud, it just has a longer 3/8 section to clear the rods. The 2 bolt LT studs actually have the longest 3/8 section for the tray, but they still are too long on the 7/16 part to clamp the cap. So after talking to CNC Carl, I have come to the conclusion that I am going to use the small journal studs, without the windage provision, and then get this pan. Looks like a really nice pan.

Really is a bummer about the stud deal.

That is the same pan I will be running on my SHP block. I had it modified somewhat for my application.

Whats the application, and what did you have to modify. Mine is a 67 A-body.
