AM I JUST FULL OF HOT AIR???

Post by oldhead »

I have a SBC-400,Blown and nitrous too,but this without nitrous....I got many runs on my 3575# malibu with it at 21# of boost(no nitrous) and it goes 60ft/1/8m/1/4m...1.48/6.10,117/9.48,147.....I put a big bottom pulley to redline the YSI blower and have 26#and it goes 1.38/5.68,123.76/8.99,147........5 mph more in the 1/8,and the same 147 in a 1/4....Plugs look good....I think it's hot air(No cooler) just bought a water/alcohol injector......ANY BODY ELSE HERE HAD THIS PROBLEM????? :D :D :D :D OLDHEAD

Well you are going quicker because you have boost sooner.

When boost goes up and power does not, it's a sign of restriction.

After-cooling can help. I'm unsure how much that type of cooling will help your situation (because you are putting more fluid into the intake)

Is this carbureted? The methanol/water injector will still help some if it is, but it may not be the end all to beat all.

I put one on a FI/Vortech T-Trim SBF and it picked up over 80 HP with no changes to fuel & spark. A lot was left on the table but the customer is sort of a maniac behind the wheel so I wanted to make sure there was some in the bank.

Your only picking up 24mph in the backhalf.
Are you using a cog belt on this?
Do you have a data logger installed or are you using the "seat of your pants" and plug readings?
results speak for themselves

I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLIES......Yes it is a blowthru carb'ed engine. You will note that power went way up in 1/8 mile,5 MPH.The car felt like when I spray it with a 150 shot.....I just bought a Innovate data logger, but not using yet.....Cog belt....Local dyno owner said he saw 175 hp. on a blown BBC. using pump gas......150 on another....usind a Snow W/A injector....THANKS..Oldhead

Did you try taking a little timing out when you increased the boost?

If it was a chassis dyno the roll most likely wasn’t as heavy as the car so the load wouldn’t be as much. Maybe it wants a little of the old take some timing out trick, down the track or in high gear? I’ve never seen water or water and alcohol slow one down when the boost is over 10 or 12 lbs.

Are your valve springs up to snuff. If there weak and start floating some they will limit the RPM of the engine....like a rev limiter. Just something else to check.

At 26psi the intake air is going to be ~ 300 degrees. An intercooler or methanol injection will pick lots of power

Maybe you're running out of gear?

WOW! You're picking up 12 mph in the 1/8 from a 150 shot and already going 112mph! That's crazy. No intercooler at all, or what?

RPM?

Post by raynorshine »

you don't say what RPM, or duration of your camshaft?

thinking what black z is thinking, maybe too much gear?? wonder if something in the low 3.xx's would help?

Sorry wrong info.....I just went 1.35/5.60 at 123.93/8.80 at 152.49....Got time slips mixed....Cam is 248-260 roller at 114cl. Never take it over 7000.....I like the street convertor that I have its a 2400 rpm,10 1/2",about 38 deg.postive angle,with a 2.3 multplying stator.....But slips 19%......OLDHEAD....Hope to try w/a injector soon....OLDHEAD

WOW 19% with only 2.3 STR? Who built this converter? Abe Lincoln! The newest converters are seeing 2.5-2.6 STR and obtaining 92-93% effeciency on the big end.

@ 26PSI your air temp is over 280 degrees not withstanding frictional heat!

1. Get a new converter
2. Intercooler
3. then spray some dope to it
4. Did I mention the converter or intercooler yet?
