Post by bentwheel43 »

I been useing Cat Timing Gears for the last 2 years, last week my teammate broke his gears on a 406sbc and bent all but 2 valves.Last year another racer broke a timing chain and bent some valves. Are the gears prone to breaking or was it just bad luck?My gears is on a 451 mopar.

When I ran gear drives back in the 70's and 80's it was always Summers Bros stuff. Never had a problem one.... I don't know who would make a good one today (?)

Four of us run the Milidon. pain in the assets to set up, but has worked fine. A few of the blower cars use them too.

Well,we run alot of rould with the car, many passes, its a dead-on car. When I took the motor down the gears looks brand new,but I don't want to blow the motor. The 406sbc had a Milidon, put a 630 roller and made 3 passes, it broke all the teeth off the cam gear and broke the crank gear in 3 pieces, all of the pieces were fount.I just put roller cam in mine, that gear sure did hold timing good.If someone know about problems with then maybe I can find out before I FIND OUT!!

Something else is going on to break all the teeth off a Milodon drive. I suspect valve float or valve to piston interference or something got between the gear teeth.
I will not install gear drives like the the pete jackson etc in any engine
regardless of what the customer wants. Imho unless your driving a dry sump pump off the cover I fail to see any reason to run a gear drive. Use a jesel belt drive or cloyes billet. Cam drives are not a place to try and save money.
