Ten minutes to make a basic tool.
Several SBC oil pumps laying around, losing track of what's what, so made this.
None were 50 psi so springs ordered.

Green 50lb spring arrived, pulled a pink spring that was cracking at 69psi, green spring pretty much spot on 50lb in an old heavy casting Mellings pump.
So if the running motor doesn't pull 50 with 20W50 I know we have a major F up.
Might try running lighter and lighter oils to see what will maintain 5 odd psi at hot idle but still crack the 50lb spring at revs when hot.
New territory for me, old school 20W50 bloke.
Straight 50 in the race motors back in the day, complete with heating blankets on the oil tanks.

GREAT idea. I agree that just from my experience when you buy a new pump you never really know what kind of oil pressure you are going to wind up with. That was not the case years ago. I build a lot of big block mopars they kind of spoil you since you can access the relief spring from the outside.

You brought back a memory, explains why I did this it turns out.rebelrouser wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 9:16 am GREAT idea. First motor I built (327, early 80s, still going) Put a new Mellings pump on it, came with two springs, put it in with the high pressure one.....100psi oil pressure. Motor out change spring.
First course of action after that was to run engines on stand before install, good for running cams in at least.
Seems I've made a tool to prevent a problem from over 40 years ago. Better late than never
