removing connecting rod cap with cap screws/bolts

Is there an easier way to remove the cap from a connecting rod (H-beam in this case) when the cap has dowels? I might not be asking the question the right way, but the caps (cap screw/bolt style) on my Eagle H-Beam Rods is a bugger to separate. I can buy the separator tool, but how do I remove the caps with the rod installed on the crank? This is likely an easy one for folks that have done it a lot, but I am struggling with it. All help is appreciated.

Loosen the bolts a few turns, tap each bolt head with a brass drift and it pushes the rod away from the cap.

and when out of the engine, do as posted above while holding the cap in your hand or around a large wooden dowel. A few gentle taps on the bolt head will do the trick.

On the engine, I do as mentioned, lossen bolts and tap with plastic mallet. Off the engine I purchased a separator tool, good investment works great. I am getting clumsy in my old age and I was afraid of dropping a piston and rod assembly tapping on them out of the engine.
