need opinions on 598 cam
I'm rounding up parts to put a N/A 598 together, 10.2 dart block 4.6 bore, 6.7 rod, 14.7 compression, RHS 360 cast iron heads that have a little port work done with 2.3 and 1.880 valves, never had them flowed but I think they'd go 400 @.800. Have a sniper intake thats been ported to match, and a 1350 prosystems dominator. I'm thinking VP 113 or Q16 for fuel
Its going in a 3200 lb mud racing truck, with a 400 trans, and a 3.89 gear but I run the transfercase in low. I use a transbrake and a 4500 stall. 200ft track, generally have it shifted into drive as soon as the transbrake is released
I have a couple cams and i'm wondering if either will work decent? I'm not sure a custom grind is in the budget right now. The first is a straub custom grind .799/.740 278/299 112 separation. The second is a comp .775/.748 286/294 110 separation. Both are solid roller . I'm hoping to spin it 7500
I know the heads are not ideal but they are what I've got and I'm hoping to make it work and make decent power

If the heads flow around 400cfm at .800 that should be adequate for what you are trying to do.
The Straub cam looks closer but I would run 1.8 rockers on the intake and 1.8 rockers on the exhaust and you would probably dial it in at an additional +2.

Did a quick calc off my programs and says done in something close to my idea above should easily make 1100HP @7200rpms and with a CSA guestimate will choke just about 7400rpms. Torque would be about 950lb/ft at about 5600 rpms and VE at about 112% You need the .825" to .850" on the cam to get there. It should pull strong all the way to 7500 but you will need a light strong valve train to keep it happening. Just some educated (program) guesses.

Re: need opinions on 598 cam
You might want to get the heads to a fair flow bench and get real flow numbers on the head because looking at numbers on RHS 360 iron heads are all over the block depending on the port work and who did them. There are good head shops that have gotten them up to 400cfm and a few that have tweaked above that slightly but it really needs to be checked and verified before you throw this thing together. If they end up at lets say 365cfmat.750" and may not go beyond that to .800 your setup will loose way to much power between 7000-7500 rpms with any cam and you will cheat your potential.
DON'T GUESS ON THE HEADS, CHECK THE REAL FLOW AND USE A GOOD PORTER AND VALVE JOB TO GET YOU WHERE YOU NEED TO BE!
The extra money is better spent than on all the booze costs you will want to drink with to hide the pain!

400 is the bottom what the RHS 360 flows. I have a set of the last 320 heads you can get that were ported from a very good porter and go 412 on the bad port. Drink that one.Newold1 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 04, 2018 5:03 pm You might want to get the heads to a fair flow bench and get real flow numbers on the head because looking at numbers on RHS 360 iron heads are all over the block depending on the port work and who did them. I think you might be talking about the RHSx and Pro-elite RHS360 cnc'd aluminum heads?
The RHS360 iron pro-action heads like those cnc'd and hand ported by shops like Steve Schmidt who is big in pulling engines shows his reworked iron RHS360's with 2.35 intake @ around 395 cfm.
This is the RHS iron head the OP is talking about using here and he is not sure how or who ported them and has no flow numbers and his are fitted with 2.30 valves only so I thought it would be wise to have them professional flowed and maybe massaged to get them up near 400cfm at .800.
If you have some documented numbers on this iron RHS360 heads that show well over 400 cfm please share them with us and the OP. Would help with his cam and build planning.

Re: need opinions on 598 cam
They are actually EQ castings but they are supposed to be the same as rhs. According to EQ they are capable of 450+ and competition products has them Cnc ported by Goodwin competition they claim 445+. I’m sure mine are nowhere near that but I do have a bit of money wrapped up in them lol. I’m working on getting them flowed and might look into a 2.35 intake
Re: need opinions on 598 cam
I would't put 2.350 valves in them unless I was having a cnc program ran on them first. JMO

If it flows 400 cfm i seriously doubt it will go 1100Newold1 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 04, 2018 4:51 pm Did a quick calc off my programs and says done in something close to my idea above should easily make 1100HP @7200rpms and with a CSA guestimate will choke just about 7400rpms. You might be right when we consider an out of the box Sniper manifold, and a non-optimized camshaft design and a carb that may not be ideal that estimate may fall down to 1050HP , but 1100HP can be reached with the right camshaft, intake manifold and carb if the heads will flow 400cfm @ .800".

Pipe dream!! I would be happy with 700+ on the 489" any more is good but let's get real!Newold1 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 3:40 pm You might be right when we consider an out of the box Sniper manifold, and a non-optimized camshaft design and a carb that may not be ideal that estimate may fall down to 1050HP , but 1100HP can be reached with the right camshaft, intake manifold and carb if the heads will flow 400cfm @ .800".

You might want to get some reading glasses.
OP is talking a 598 here with 14.7 to 1 compression with race fuel!
