big chevy connecting rod reccomendation

Post by rewguy »

4.250 stroke, std. deck block, howards pro max 46cc domed pistons(not sure on exact weight....but figure average weight like an srp or such), Id like to shift at 7600-7700, and cross at the same or a tick higher......Do I have to spend 1500+ to feel comfortable or will a 500-700$ rod suffice? grudge race on weekends type of car.

In my experience with BBF running up to 4.3" stroke the $500/700 H beams with 8740 or 2000 bolts will hold up fine with that use. Yes its pishing the limit in my opinion but they hold up. That said if using an expensive or rare block , crank heads etc i would say go for the more expensive/stronger option

Only you can decide your cost vs comfort level. LOL

I got a set of Callies Comp star rods in a BBC 4" stroke that is in a pulling truck.
Rev limiter at 8800 rpm right now and it's bumped it sometimes.
I got another one out in same application with Oliver rods, but only dyno time and 3 pulls now.

I went with the Callies Ultra rods in our own pulling truck, for the very thing you mentioned. (comfort vs cost) I felt the cost was worth the comfort when I hear my son running our truck. LOL But ours regularly spins over 9000 rpm.

But one of the guys we pull with is running Scat crank and rods in a Big Block Dodge and is on his third year without tear down. He doesn't turn it over about 8400-8500 but it's still the same application.

Your application less stressful than a pulling truck.

So that comfort level isn't the same for everyone.
it seems some run cheap junk and get away with it while others have trouble with good parts.

Sorry, my post probably didn't help. LOL

Run over your own engine oil on the track at 140 plus miles an hour , or on the street at 80 mph and you will very likley instantly see the value and logic of spending another 400 bucks on the Rods you should have had in the motor!!!!

Your very selfish building a motor this way to race on the street!
On the strip chances are pretty good you just hurt yourself and your property , on the street you will hurt others and there property!!

I have seen this pain and distruction happen not just once , but twice within a week watching Bronx NY street racing in the mid 70s!
You can cut a man's tongue from his mouth, but that does not mean he’s a liar, it just shows that you fear the truth he might speak about you!

We had Chinese rods in the 1970s?

Well, I guess I can still learn new things.

[no technical value]

If Chinese rods were as well made as Chinese wimmin, block sales
would take a major dump. Just saying.

when did offshore H beams become so unreliable? Way overkill in most applications.

My 2 cents.

The Molnar rods with ARP 2000 bolts will give you all the comfort you need on a well built short block and a good top end.
