Will this make 500 hp ?
I'm just finishing a 406 SBC for a customers street 74 Camaro. It has 3.73 gears and a turbo 400 with a 3500 convertor. I told him i would build 500 hp. Here is the combo :
Scat 9000 series rotating assembly with Icon forged pistons and 6" rods, internal balanced. 10. 2 compression. Piston is .005 in the hole.
Comp hyd roller 242 / 248 @ .050 .540/.562 lift 110 LSA 12-443-8 part number
Edelbrock E-210 heads, out of the box
Edelbrock performer RPM air gap intake out of the box stock.
Holley 750 vacuum #3310.
ancient unknown 1 5/8 headers.
It won't make it on to a dyno. Just thought I'd see what the pro's suggest for horsepower estimates.

Subscribed. I personally don't think so, but I'm wrong a lot,lol.
Everyone appreciates your honesty , until you're honest with them , then you're an @$$hole.
Re: Will this make 500 hp ?
I’ve never seen those heads up close and personal, so those are a question mark for me.
I’m sure it would make 500hp as is on someone’s dyno, but I think it would come up a little short here.
Victor Jr, 750DP, 1-7/8” headers should do it........ and long as the lifters allow it to rev high enough.

Somewhat handy with a die grinder.

With AFR 195's, Vic jr, 1 3/4" headers and a similar cam http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=1990
my 406 made 540 hp and 525 tq. You should be close.

79 Cmaro, 427 sbc, Tunnel Ram Dual Quad with Eddy carbs, AFR 210 Race Ready heads, 263-272 @.50 Comp solid roller cam, 4.10's and a faceplated Tremec TKO 600.

I think the etech heads are modeled after the fastburn-vortec stuff. I think it could make 500 myself.

^^^That Dyno is happy, PERIOD. I think op's deal should be close. Maybe a bit more. 383, unported profiler 195's, Erson hydraulic roller, 242-250, .545 lift, Victor jr, 750 vacc carb, made a real 500 even. Tq was soft at 465. Air gap Performer rpm, with a 4 hole 1 inch spacer, made 499 hp, but made 30 more ft/lbs. Nothing special, short rod, 5.565 400 rods, stick 400 crank turned down on mains, cheap 1 relief speed pro Pistons. Was built in 92 with a set of 993 heads and a hydraulic flat tappet. It runs high 10's low 11's in a street driven pump gas 68 firebird.Steve K wrote: ↑Sat Aug 11, 2018 7:47 pm With AFR 195's, Vic jr, 1 3/4" headers and a similar cam http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=1990

The E-210’s are not the same as the E-tec heads.

Re: Will this make 500 hp ?
I think you have a good combination that can make an honest 500 hp. I would caution you on "out of the box" cylinder heads however. They need to be pulled apart and all the valve work checked and touched up and of course use the valve springs designed for your camshaft. Some of the mail order heads have garbage hardware and shoddy assembly problems. Seen it several times in the past.
Re: Will this make 500 hp ?
x2, It will amaze you how cheaply and horrible things can go wrong with out of the box stuff. I have checked many many OOTB heads and probably 60% would live a little while and others shouldn't even be used on a flathead.
Heat is energy, energy is horsepower...but you gotta control the heat.

Re: Will this make 500 hp ?
thanks for the input guys. The customer supplied the 400 block, the carb and intake. Otherwise i may have used different parts. It will never go down a race track. I had originally told the customer that 600 hp was attainable with his budget but then i had to back track and change my mind. Once i did the math i realized that the Edelbrock E-210 head was about the best bang-for-the-buck and the next step was a big one price wise. Going from 500 to 600 hp with a pump gas small block is a big leap

Re: Will this make 500 hp ?
According to a dyno graph from Edelbrock (link below) the following made 437HP at 5500 and 457lb/ft at 4000 – however, it looked like it was still climbing at 5500:
9.6:1, 383
Air Gap
800 cfm Thunder AVS carb
E-210 Heads
242/240 .594/.594 -112 Rollin’ Thunder HR cam
1.75” Headers
https://www.jegs.com/DynoChart/300/350/350-5085.pdf
There’s a Super Chevy article (link below) of another 9.6:1, 383 (might be the same engine) only differences appearing to be a 770cfm Ultra Avenger carb and possibly/probably a different cam - the specs were undisclosed. At Westech It made 471HP at 6100 and 471lb/ft at 4500. It was making 455HP at 5500.
http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/engine ... end-build/
Considering the first one appears it hadn’t peaked, unknown correction factors between the two, and the general differences between dynos, I don’t know how much this tells you. My guess with .06:1 more compression, 23 more cubes, 242/248 -110 cam, and with the 1.625” headers it would probably fall a little short of the 500HP target, but might hit 500lb/ft. Regardless, as well matched as that stall speed is for the combo, it should be a solid street performer that I’m sure the guy will be happy with.

Re: Will this make 500 hp ?
It will be very close as those heads work very well , but with that duel plane Intake you need a bigger Carb, like a 950 with high gain boosters!
What could do you in here is the headers!
Nit so much the size , but if there is rust scale in the tubes your gonna saw off a easy 20 hp above 5K rpm !!!
