Dyno day is getting close

Post by cgarb »

I'm posting the specs for my most recent build, I will post the dyno results I get on Thursday or Friday for all to see. I'm sure it will be nothing magical, but for people to use to gain information and for my own learning.

GM 400 block splayed and filled (I know not ideal, but it is finished and I have it. It is my last go round with a stock block I promise.)
Eagle 3.875 forged crank
Scat 6.0 H beam rods
JE 10.8cc dome pistons
Block has .005 piston to deck clearance with a .040 Cometic 4.165 bore gasket
Profiler 210 castings ported
69cc chamber 221cc intake runner 2.08x1.6 valve
.200 .300 .400 .500 .600 .700
Int 153 217 274 303 318 326
Exh 113 162 191 210 226 234

Wilson/Profiler intake manifold matched to the 1206
George Ruepert 950 methanol carb

LGM 1.6 shaft rockers
3/8 .135 wall pushrods
240 seat 565 open springs with lightweight tool steel retainers

Crane Solid roller camshaft
272/280 @.050
312/318 adv
.420/.420 lobe lift
.672/.672 gross lift
109 LS
Cam card says 107 intake CL but it degreed in 1 degree retarded and I wasn't fussing over 1 degree, the timing set would move it 2.

1 7/8 Headman headers for a chevelle
2 sets of collectors to test, straight 4-1 and a set of tri y's

Areospace vacuum pump set up.

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you will be making enough power to hurt a stock block, but I hope not. :D

What kinda power are you expecting ?

I don't want to expect anything...lol. I was making calculated power with my 377 in the 560/580 hp range with et weight calculations. I've never dyno'd anything ever in my life so I want to go into it with an educational outlook. If I leave the building with more power than the 1st pull, its all in one piece and I learned something...I will be happy.

Combo dosent sound bad, i think those in flow numbers are a little optimistic, what is the avr csa of the intake port and final compression

13.6-1 final compression...I can't comment on the flowbench other than its a SF-600 thats not mine and I use it because its at the shop I deal with. That being said heres where the same bench says I started:

.200 .300 .400 .500 .600 .700
int 147 214 269 294 301 302
exh114 158 184 205 213 224

I see improvement, I guess the dyno numbers and the final result of what the car et's is what's most important to me. Yes, that bench does seem a bit optimistic to me also, but its better than flying blind I guess.

Yes, lets just hope its the best little 400 block GM ever cast...lol. If it makes it through this season and hopefully 1 more, I'm going to freshen it up in a new Dart block. If not...well, then I will be buying a shortblock and hopefully it don't hurt the top end too bad. The good news is I'm not totally reliant on my race car at the moment. I've been working on a car for an older gentleman that I used to race with some years back. I got offered to drive his car which is faster and a better car than mine. I will be taking advantage of that offer as much as I can. Super nice guy and I am very appreciative of his offer. Just started making some License runs in it last weekend before the rain and ran a 5.72 in the 1/8th and a 9.18 in the 1/4 lifting at the 1000ft.

13 pulls, jetting changes, air bleeds and timing changes, tested 2 sets of collector's. I made a peak of 651 at 6900 and 570tq at 4900. No major issues and the engine ran pretty well. I'm happy. Started at 620 and ended with 651.

Yes he did. That should run good in the car.

Thanks, the shop owner told me he wouldn't be super worried about my block for drag racing....he said if it was going in a dirt late model it wouldn't have a chance. He also said if I get rid of my "Stone age" 1/16 1/16 3/16 ring pack with something thinner and low tension I could see possibly another 30hp. If it makes it till I can get it freshened up in a new dart block I will look into that for sure. Only real problem we had was we couldn't get any vacuum out of the vacuum pump at first....forgot the bolt at the fuel pump pushrod. I found it so I don't feel too bad.
