Opinions on GM 87 350 swirl port heads
Looking for Opinions on GM 87 350 swirl port heads casting number 14102191. I have a New pair Nos bare castings that will need to be shot blasted, been sitting a while. Would it be worth my time to do a fresh valve job, install new stainless valves, etc? I have no use for them, just looking to resell when done. If this post is out of the text, Please move.
Thanks for looking,

Not worth the cost of the parts and the labor when done, so why bother??
Best use is a door stop or on the end of a anchor rope(not anchor chain so you can just cut it and leave it down there)

x2 on selling as is now, not worth what youll have in them. Not much of a market for stock iron heads unless they are a killer deal for someone.

Just paid 250 for a complete pair of those with valve covers and rockers. They were new take offs of a gm crate motor the guy had bought, never ran. I just got them to put on engine for truck im restoring. mainly got them for the nice powder coat ......hope it gives u an idea what they are worth

I love how these heads get a bad rap.

Re: Opinions on GM 87 350 swirl port heads
Thanks to all that replied. The heads were free. I was going to buy a stainless valve & spring kit for $ 100.00 and the cost to blast them. Then my time for the valve job. This is going to be a stocker head with No porting or extra work.
Thanks Again,
Thanks Again,

I used to have a really low opinion of these head but when you put them in the context of what they were designed for they're great heads to make torque below 4000 RPM so plan on building the engine for a low RPM high torque. If you're going to try to make horsepower above 5000 RPM you need to look into I different cylinder head
Re: Opinions on GM 87 350 swirl port heads
I have only done a few sets, my favorite set was cut for 2.055/1.6 valves, fully ported, studs and guide plates, cut for roller springs, ceramic coated valves and chambers.

I guess the question is will they rust up again before they sell?

I like those heads, but not for the obvious reason. I think the swirl ports along with 305 heads helped inspire GM's knock sensor development program.
Re: Opinions on GM 87 350 swirl port heads
That is funny. These heads require a much different spark curve and less total timing vs. conventional port. Thanks, Charlie

Re: Opinions on GM 87 350 swirl port heads
I've heard that these heads like ~25 deg total timing, which is really, really low compared to the junk chamber in the '882', '624', etc heads that preceded them in the SBC development timeline. Have you all found the same?
