489 BBC - budget bruiser.

Post by KnightEngines »

Dyno'd this yesterday, it's a simple 489 BBC for a friends hoon boat, motor had a freshen, some tweaks & a dyno session to dial it in.

Basics are:
2 bolt 454 block with studs & decent machining
Scat cast crank
Scat H-beam rods
SRP pistons with a small dome

Edelbrock E-street 290cc heads
2.19/1.88" valves, revised valve job & mild porting (mostly pocket port & runner tidy up)
Flat milled a bit

Solid roller cam, mild lobes - 268/274 on 110 centres, .730/.680" lift with 1.8/1.7 rockers in on 106 ICL.
Crane lifters
3/8" pushrods
Crane gold 1.8/1.7 rockers
Crane stud girdle

Edelbrock Vic jnr intake, out the box, no porting
1050 4150 carb
Stock Hei dissy with MSD cap & Crane Hi6 ign.
2" primary, 3.5" collector 4-1 pipes.

Fuel was pump 92 junk.

Heads flowed around 310cfm @ .700" on the intake - really nothing special.

Plan was to make 620-630hp with a strong TQ curve & less than 6500rpm so it'll live at WOT for a while.

I wanted to put 2.25" intake valves in it & do a bit more port work on the intake runners & manifold, but budget said no - wish I'd pushed harder, it's using everything the heads have got plus some, it'd pick up easy with more head!

Nice power and great average numbers there!
Was the Carb a real 4500 series?

Carb is actually a holley 850 street with quickfuel 1050 main body & throttle plate. So yeah, it's a proper 4150, just a bit of a mongrel. I'll have to post up the rest of the sheet, that carb holds .89 to .9 lambda the whole pull, fuel curve is real good for a cast metering block basic carb.

I'm pretty pleased with this one given the limitations of the heads!

Very Nice- I did a very similar 498 last year with the older 6045 heads, a 2.25" would really help the seats they use for sure.
I see your problem though, overshot the cam about 25° :D
Dyno graph is with QFT 1050AN on the RPM AG vs his QFT 870 VS. Cam is a Howards shelf HR. Made 627HP/642lb with 870.

I was thinking I had maybe over-cammed it a little, but in the boat when they hit it prop slip acts like a 4000 converter, so what it does below 4 don't really matter & more cam carries the little heads higher - we needed to turn 6200rpm to go over 100mph in the boat (which was the aim, boat topped out at 96mph/5800rpm previously), it wasn't gonna get there with those heads & a more sensible cam!

We've had issues with lifter bleed with a HR & sustained higher rpm in the past - had to be a SR.

Maybe 10 degrees over cammed in my opinion.

I guess the humor didn't come across the same as it sounded in my head :D I would have used a SR in that application also. Like you, I was happy those heads made the power they did. I did the best I could for the VJ with a 2.19, and blended the chambers quick, with some mild SSR work. I didn't have a chance to flow them though.

CP,

Curious as to how the motor idled and what vacuum it had?

Also, do you find the octane requirement on pipemax to be true?

What fuel did you guys test with?

Thanks in advance and nice results on both counts!

No idea on idle vacuum, doesn't have to run brakes or anything so we never checked!
Idles clean at 1200rpm, we'll idle it up in the boat to 1400.
I don't really pay attention to octane requirements in pipemax - I haven't found it to be accurate, I can usually run quite a lot more compression/cylinder pressure than pipemax thinks will work.
This ran on our pump 98 - which is roughly equivalent to US 92 octane pump stuff.
Det meter never moved, she's dead safe.

Downleg or annular booster main body? Are you using the air bleeds provided with the main body?

Missed that, no, it's a Crane hyd roller reground by Camtech over here to a solid roller profile.

Downleg boosters, air bleeds are as supplied by QF - good fuel curve, no need to change them.

Idles 950 with 12"-13" IIRC.
I use the octane number as a guide in PM, dyno vs car is different. But go by my limited experience for the most part.
I dyno all my pump gas engines on BP fuel from the local station, 91 octane with 10% Ethanol. You're not getting away from it around here.
I did swap the BP fuel for some VP MS109 on this just to see. No other changes (timing or jetting) made 689HP and 698lbs.
