Great, now we will get a novel by our resident guru why we are wrong by not dipping.

Engine oil smeared over ring before installation on the piston then a few drops after installation and spun in groove works for me, and by the sound of a lot of previous posts works for pretty much everyone that does it , some here have been building engines for that long they get to a stage where they see engines they built up to 30+ years ago back in the shop , on strip down they find not much more than a worn but honest engine ,the insight they get is their practices of many years have not compromised the package from get go and have proven their methods satisfactory for a competent build .. We also find things that we have used in the past that were not as good as their manufacturers claimed , for me a couple were a silicon sealant that came out in the 90's that chafed in a case seal ,another was a new design head gasket with a [special] coating that would weep after a couple of years ,and another,a gasket from the OEM that walked out of situ with clockwork precision.

All that said ,we would not be in business now if our previous practices regularly came back and bit us on the arse.

Yet ,,,,, some years back i saw a documentary on AMG and they were showing the engine assembly process, as usual in a hermetically sealed vault ,when it came to piston installation there was the obligatory shinny prepped block and a rack of similarly prepped pistons ,,the guy lines up the ring compressor tool on the block , inverts the piston ,,,,and then dips it into a bucket of oil!!!! that puppy was drowning in oil ,then insert it with a bump .
You don't see an pinned AMG roiling a screen out behind it , do you?

I didn't see the need to put a bucket next to the engine stand then , and probably wont in the future.

Cheers.

30wt and dipped in a pound coffee can since quart oil cans aren't around and dripping everywhere.

Works fine to me.

Thin assembly lube on the rings and a small amount on the skirts. Just enough to have a light layer over the cylinder walls and on the rings. I don't want them dry, but also don't want them to be dripping wet. I want just as much there as I find when I have to pull a head or something.

I've used two stroke oil many times. Works great and don't take much.

Engine oil cylinders, piston skirts and saturate ring pack and lands. Tried it every other way stated here (not completely dry-WD at least) but wouldn't even consider anything but plenty of motor oil anymore.
