It would be interesting to expand this beyond domestic V-8 engines . . . . . .

I have never worked on one, but I understand that the 1952 Crosley four cylinder engine puts out tons of torque/hp for it's size, which is 2.0L I think. Another amazing engine is the Miller/Offenhauser/Drake engine that was designed for Indianapolis 500 racing. The design of this engine was decades ahead of it's time.

A 2018 Ford Coyote is a vastly superior design to any of the antiques being discussed.

The original poster referenced using 90% of it's main parts available to the masses, i.e heads, blocks, rods, crankshafts and intakes. I'm still going with G3 Hemi. The Hellcat engine is available in crate form and it's a mass produced powerplant that belts out over 700hp. How can one pull that off with the ancient technology of a BBC using 90% of it's main parts?

Back in 71 built a 351C or my 69 shelby mustang wasnt even much in the way of aftermarket parts for it. pulled 650+ hp at the rear wheels i say + as curve was still climbing but couldnt hold it on the rollers. this was my daily driver back then. shift point 9000 rpm but took it to 10500 3 times.

Newold1 wrote: Mon Feb 12, 2018 8:57 am In today's performance aftermarket one would have to say the LS engine family both N/A and supercharged variants. Bang for the buck, quantity and and strength per HP, not even a close second!
I am well aware of the ls engines. I have half a dozen ls projects right now. They are all forced induction though. Still tough to beat a bbc. N/A engines make power because they want to, not because they are forced to, lol. I like that one. The whole Ls deal to me, I get it, that's the most widely available engine, not much different than a 350 chevy in the 70's 80's and 90's. But, guys say to me, but they make so much power with boost. I say, put the same set of turbos on a well built 350, it will make just as much power. Granted, the stock blocks are capable of handling 1500hp. That's not holding to long on a stock 350 4 bolt block.
.
Beat a bbc na hp per cu? Or just in raw output period? Cuz no doubt a bbc should outdo the ls because you can simply get so many cubic inches out of the bbc. You have advantage also of bigger bores for bigger valves.

But for simple hyd roller deals for example in oem configuration, the ls for the money is hard to beat imo. A 416 stroker ls3, using stock intake and heads will easily do 600-625 hp, on pump gas. Modified aftermarket intake, even more, upwards of 700 is doable.

And thats near a 150-200 lbs lighter package

Really? A pocket ported set of 049 ovals will make over 700hp. With no boost. Not to mention a set of 990 rectangle ports.

Really. I cam, pulley, headers and tune and the Hellcat is over 800hp. However you did later go on to say naturally aspirated as being one of the caveats. You stated using 90% main components in the specific build. What would parts would be in compliance? Pistons, solid roller cams and valve train, intake manifolds and carbs? If you allow pistons and solid rollers then I'm staying with Mopar and say 426 Hemi. I work for Chrysler so I have a lil patriotism going on.

One answer...Chrysler 426 Hemi! Back in 1970 my brother went to order a Boss 429 Mustang but came back with a '70 Hemicuda on order.
We picked it up July of 1970 and had the most fun of our lives! Still has it to this day!

I am basically a Chevy small block fan, but pop the hood and show me a hemi and I am drooling, When it it comes to the visuals, I think nothing does it like the hemi!
