Re: Best engine??
If I wasn't clear, which I don't think it was, I meant N/A. No doubt, Ls and mods are great, but still can't beat a bbc. I am well aware of hemi mopars, but, they can make great power, but rods are out, and the cost factor kills it. Boss 429, they have issues, and were over rated. B and R/B mopars, not even in the same league. Remember, factory cast iron head cores. Sbc's, again, we are limited to stock rods and cranks. I am also talkin max power, max effort type builds. A buick, olds, or Pontiac won't even come close.

G3 Hemi.
Wide crankcase, tall cam to crank centerline of a whopping 7.44", (BES made a 417 from a 5.7 block using a 4.250 crankshaft ") bore spacing of 4.460, deck height 9.24 and great cylinder heads. 340+ cfm from the 6.4 unported. Some head porters have reached 400 cfm from the Apache heads. 6.1 intake manifold is a 2 piece design that allows for aggressive porting.

Re: Best engine??
What issues do the bosses have? Blocks? I think they can be put on a 460 block.Frankshaft wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2018 9:22 pm If I wasn't clear, which I don't think it was, I meant N/A. In what way are they over rated?
Why do Chevy fans over look the stupid port layout on sbc and BBC engines?
Re: Best engine??
There are a lot of other engine builders out there that have done the same.bigpoppapreston wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2018 10:35 pm G3 Hemi.

You would be surprised to know Frankshaft has some of the highest horsepower Ford heads A heads C heads. Etc same with BBC.englertracing wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2018 10:51 pmWhat issues do the bosses have? Blocks? But I agree, there is so much more available at such less cost for the SBC and BBC. It's not even a comparison

Re: Best engine??
The Boss 429s never hit the showroom here, and I went to buy one after seeing the center fold ad for them. They had never even heard of it, and had no interest in selling one. So I went and bought a new L78turbo2256b wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2018 1:10 pm another rare engine was the ford semi hemi got slammed in most racing venues because of its powers.
just after purchasing my 69 Shelby GT350 the boss 429s hit the show room floor. told my sales guy wanted to trade in my 2 month old shelby for it he thought i was joking. gave me all kinds of excuses as to why he couldnt sell it to me

Re: Best engine??
For an 'old school' small block restricted to stock block & factory head castings you will not beat a Holden, unless you got a 4V clevo, even then it'd be a close run thing.

Re: Best engine??
Given the scope of this forum, imo "Best Engine" would read to me: Best 'Factory Designed' Engine in my book. Rod ratios, cylinder head flow, valve placement, cylinder spacing... and such.
In that view, an engine (family) is certainly NOT "best" because it's mass produced over the years.

Re: Best engine??
In today's performance aftermarket one would have to say the LS engine family both N/A and supercharged variants. Bang for the buck, quantity and and strength per HP, not even a close second!

Re: Best engine??
Rod ratios are for conversation. They don't matter, within reason. Head flow, its tough to beat a bbc rectangle port. Valve placement, again, tough to beat a canted valve. No one said you can't dowel shift and angle mill eitherbigblockmopar wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2018 7:17 am Given the scope of this forum, imo "Best Engine" would read to me: Best 'Factory Designed' Engine in my book. Re: Best engine??
I am well aware of the ls engines. I have half a dozen ls projects right now. They are all forced induction though. Still tough to beat a bbc. N/A engines make power because they want to, not because they are forced to, lol. I like that one. The whole Ls deal to me, I get it, that's the most widely available engine, not much different than a 350 chevy in the 70's 80's and 90's. But, guys say to me, but they make so much power with boost. I say, put the same set of turbos on a well built 350, it will make just as much power. Granted, the stock blocks are capable of handling 1500hp. That's not holding to long on a stock 350 4 bolt block.
