3 -D printing

Post by mag2555 »

Anyone using 3 -D printing in the smaller porting community to prototype ports and chambers?

So nobody yet is doing this I guess?

I've done some small carb parts, pump cams and vent whistles.

I've also used 3D printing to make some experimental carburetor parts but I think it could certainly be used for other areas to make experimental parts to try new ideas. It starts to get costly once the parts get very big.

Is that the new Lego build an engine set! Awesome...lol. 3d printing has many many uses. Once it becomes more mainstream you will really see it take off. We will have 3d print everything. I read about how they think 3d printing could possibly help make a Mars colony possible. Need a tool, email the 3d program to Mars and the tool can be printed.

Ken,
How large of a machine does it take to do that?
which leads to
What machine do you use?

Are you making custom pump cams or just copying Holley stuff?

It probably wont be long before every house has a small 3d printer along with their pc and inkjet.

I have printed 3 complex intake manifolds in the past 2 months.
It takes about a week to print one V8 manifold with a good printer and it is expensive.

A manifold is good for about 20 dyno pulls and it takes a lot of prep to get one sealed enough to run.

I am putting together a single cylinder engine and dyno now with a TFX pressure measurement system so that I can make single runners on the CNC in urethane instead of printing.

Are you able to do them transparent enough to see fuel distribution? I recall seeing one done a few years back that was made in 2 parts and then bolted together for easy porting and modifying and it was simi transparent.

Printer costs are coming down every year. Ones that can do metal are already here and likewise those costs are falling. The real cost is in the software needed to run it and someone who knows how to do CAD.
