First time out with new 412Reher Morrison looking for opinions

Post by VegaJohn »

Got my Vega done finally and ran this past weekend. Car is 2660lbs with me.
Engine is a 412sbc Reher Morrison they were rated at 705hp
Powerglide with 1.76
5600rpm JW stall
4.88 gears in a 9" with 31x13 MT slicks brand new at 8.5psi
Car is ladder bar with stock front suspension. My best ET was 6.21@110.8
Our air is always around 4000-4800ft. Best 60 foot was 1.35 I have the timing set at 40, I tried 36 first. Jets are 84s all 4. Does this seem in the ballpark? I was expecting a bit better but I know the hill gets steep as you get deeper in the 6s. I'm going to try and get a dyno sheet from R/M and get a converter built for this engine.

With that rear end gear and big tires, you are not going to get good 1/8 mile times. If you are going to run at 1/8 mile tracks only, get a much lower rear end gear ( 5.57 or more ) and maybe even a 1.96 first gear ratio

Thanks Joe. I was hoping to get your take on this. I was going to try some 5.42s or even 5.83s but I had lots telling me that I would have traction problems.

I lost .04 in the 60ft going from a 1.89 to a 1.80 gear set when I broke my planetary 3 weeks ago. Got a loaner trans from a good friend to finish the year.

We race a similar car at 1/8 mile only- 5.38 gears, 1.96 low, and 6800 stall converter-- We can only get a 28 X 10 slick under the car, but NO TRACTION problems at all- 1.26 60 foot- 5.57 at 125

I have a customer with a Firebird with 4 link at 2890 lbs, dont know if with driver or not, has my 356 SBC with flat top pistons with heads angle milled to about 12 to 1. on E85. Has glide with 1.76 and 5200 stahl. Sunday made 7 runs from 6.16 to 6.21 with sixty foot at 1.31. Dont remember what gear. Goes thru at at or around 7000

VegaJohn, a steeper rear gear will actually make the car hook harder.

Tenxal, when you say steeper you mean lower (or) a BIGGER number correct ? just to make sure the fella knows what you are trying to say. Mark

Yes, this will be 1/8th use only. I will keep my 4.88 complete in case I decide to run nitrous or go 1/4 mile.
