vortec 520 and 059 heads

Post by OILEAKY »

Looking for some good street heads for a 327. Since vortec 520 and 059 heads do not have the fast burn, heart shaped combustion chamber, assuming the same chamber volume, is there a HP loss compared to 906/062 heads ?

Yes ... the horsepower loss is due to more than the combustion chamber.

Thanks, Walter. Sounds like we're talking about less air flow as well.

Unless you already own a set and the vortec intake for them don;t go looking for them.

There a lots of "305 heads" that you can use, that don;t need a vortec intake...if you want to go down that road.
( home porting- larger valves,,,416"s, 081's etc) If you are going to go down the vortec head path , use the real
deal L-31 062's 906's

A 64cc 083 head from a L98 350 TPI motor can work real well. Responds well to porting and larger 2.02 valves too. Modern valve covers Modern chamber/ spark plug location, hardened ex seats.
113 L98 aluminum is another good one for a 327. All diamonds in the rough.
Anything OEM will need judicious rework with a die grinder to wake them up.

The 327 SBC is a great-easy motor to supercharge.(Weiand 142/177 Roots Edelbrock-Eatons MP122.....or.Procharger---Vortech centrifical blow thru..).. Another real good path to street power. Use a ported 76cc head for blower friendly low cr.

Thanks, f-bird and wyrmrider, This 327 is sort of a pet, I pulled it out of a vette in 73 and have had it in 3 different cars. It has the camel bumps it came with on it now. It's fresh, with flat tops, and is going into my '29 2000 Lb street roadster . I'm 72, and won't be doing any racing with it, just having fun.
I have a chance to pick up a complete 350 vortec motor with new Summit 151124 vortec heads on it , for cheep ($ 500) and was thinking of using those heads on the old 327. Can they be milled enough to get good compression ? Maybe I ought to use THOSE with that blower, f-bird.
Have a social security check burning a hole in my pocket.

AS posted above some late model heads are thin
BVVC picking those for a blower
someone else can say which ones
I like the spark plug placement better in the last pic
