SBF AFR 220 heads

Post by xr8 5.0 »

Has anyone used these new heads from AFR, I was thinking of using a set of these on my next engine build but havn't been able to find much info on them, has any one had a set on there flow bench to veify AFR's flow figures and what cross section are the intake ports, has anyone done any back to back dyno testing against the older 225 outlaw head.
The engine will have twin GT35 turbos running some where around 20 to 25 psi , what are the AFR heads like with this much boost do they suffer from distortion issues that could leed to head gasket failures.

which new heads?
On Turbo/ blower heads
many years ago I blew up a lot of them
look for thick decks
thick chambers
good water flow around the exhaust and spark plug
good valve train geometry at target lift
seats/ provision for inconel exhausts
reasonable flow
remember may heads are made for weight conscious classes which may not apply
you want to be able to achieve quench with lower cr which may mean a smaller chamber
tight modern combustion chamber
there is a reason that hemi's and semi hemis have been developed
This is a subject that I need to look into
what block, crank, cam journal are you targeting?
I ended up using Olds Mains and Chry rod journals
Application was twin engine offshore boat
Arias has been building heads for endurance blown motors for 40 years
There are also many new designs

Thanks for the reply but i didn't think I had to repeat my self, the heads are mentioned in the title, Small Block Ford AFR 220cc , these heads got released late last year and I have not seen a set over here in Australia but have been very happy with the AFR heads I have used in the past on boosted applications.

The engine has a dart block, scat crank and rods with Diamond sherical dished pistons speced out by Steve Morris race engines, 4.155" bore 3.4" stroke and will be on E85.
the car will be mainly used at the drags with limited street use. I agree with alot of the items you have mentioned above except for the idea on quench , I believe quench is your enemy when you start making a ton of power and start pushing alot of fuel though an engine, especialy one on e85 or methonal , you run the risk of hydralicing the engine on the raw fuel still above the piston at TDC so i like to set my piston to head clearence at .060" or greater.

sorry- posting late on the SBF
Disagree with you about the quench
I've run 50 lbs boost with tight quench on methanol
and reasonably tight quench on steel rod 35% Nitro
but if you are not getting any detonation, piston tops look good...
lot's of new SBF heads out there including Hemi's
Took a quick look at the specs on the 220's
I would not run 8mm valves with a turbo
these appear to be high rpm NA heads

There should be no raw fuel
if there is you have a problem
carb?

I'll pontificate, thanks for the feedback
I like the new chrysler "hemi head" or the new Ford Raptor chamber
now what's available along this line for ford?
http://www.nickariasjr.com/sb-ford-hemi.asp
and if you do not like quench it has none

what are these Australian heads?

"The Clevor is a great engine due to the canted-valve arrangement and does very well in the Popular Hot Rodding Engine Masters series competitions. Not a hemi-head, though...in fact the better power is produced by the heads with the quench-chambers. The 2-V heads and the 4-V HO heads had open chambers...not bad (but, not great, either) with the smaller 2-V valves and intake ports, real dogs with the huge valves and intake ports in the 4-V HO engines.
For street use the Australians had a quench chambered 2-V head that worked quite well, they are available here in the U.S. from Aus Ford Parts - Aussie 351 Cleveland Specialists
. The Clevor intake manifolds are available from Edelbrock and a few other very difficult to locate sources, most of which seem to be in Australia."

Cheers!

I have some ordered but they have not yet been delivered. It's been 3-4 weeks.
Maybe they will show up soon.
