I stuck one in my buddies 78 nova that i built. a few years ago 355"...ported 305ho heads (#601) with 1.94-1.50 valves with 7/16 studs
stock pushrods( stiffer would be better)..comp pro magnum lifters(i do not like the retainers in them) but shift it at 7400 rpm Tall Tunnelram with 2 eddy 600 carbs 456 gears and it runs on 91 octane ..power brakes work and et is 11.94 at 116-117 mph.Th350.

The engine is apart ( due to not covering the carbs during a rain storm) and thinking of the same grind but put it on a 106LSA...That is what he wants...I would like to see a solid lifter cam with edm lifters stuck into the engine.
That 292H is a good "cheap" grind with the right parts.
I have no idea what HP the thing makes but for a daily driver it ain't too bad..

I would like to know more about the 280cam you speak of camking that spanked the 280H..I am really close to installing a 280H in my 350..mileage reasons

A few years ago I had a guy bring in a 350 that he bought for his street rod assuring me that this engine was "radical". He wanted to run it in order to check for leaks, see what power it would make, timing it would like etc. When we first started the engine and it had been run a lot I noticed right away that it didn't sound "right". It was VERY loud out the exhaust yet it sounded retarded even with lots of timing cranked into the engine. Anyway after a warmup it had a major oil leak so we quit for the evening and he came by the next day to pull the oil pan. I told him while he was at it to go ahead and pull the timing cover because I felt that the cam was out of time. I had put it in split overlap just to see if the timing pointer was reasonably close, it wasn't. BUT I could probe the spark plug hole to find that it actually was... Removing the cover found the cam timed crank key to dot instead of dot to dot.

I helped him get it put back together and we ran it that evening. It managed to make 306 horsepower much to his surprise. It was a stock engine, 624 heads, 292 Magnum cam, Performer 2101, Edelbrock 1405 carburetor. I wish I would have done a pull with the cam out of time. I bet it wouldn't have made 200 horsepower by the way it sounded. The engine went into his street rod where it really ran quite well. He was pleased. So much for "radical"..

I feel that once you're getting up to 240 at .050 that having a hydraulic cam at least in a 350 is probably starting to become a real limiter but in something like a 400 it's probably ok. I'm sure the stock springs were not helping in my example but everyone's seen engines built just like this one...

I'm just ribbin' ya a little, Mike.

I've used a few Magnums in the past (10+ years ago) and a friend of mine used one last summer, against my advise, but I'm always curious to see what you've got up your sleeve.

I'll shoot you a PM here in a little bit. Thanks

I had a friend set up a race my 350 nova with 270H comp cam with Q jet intake (ported) ex manifolds (ported)
Q jet and single point distributor...Heads were ported and chambers were 54cc after unshrouding #186

the other guy had a camaro with 292H and a 355..he worked at oreilly..everyone said he was the one to beat...
I won..he had the same set up as Dave Mclain mentioned above..the thing petered out at 5500rpm stock springs and heads.

i was accused or running NOS
The guy became a buddy of mine..and the next engine he put together had the smallest cam he ever used in one of his builds.
a 268H..and he told me it was the fastest best running engine he ever built..
Some people do listen..
his car ran 15's with the 292H mine ran 13.028 at 110

I can recall Hot Rod Magazine pusblishing a 355 ci engine combo that used 882 heads, flat-top pistons, 2101 intake and a Comp 292H cam way back around 1988. A whopping 300-325 hp combo, with poor vacuum and drivability. Ugh! The dark days of performance....

I used a 280H Magnum in a 10:1 383 when Edelbrock had just introduced their Performer RPM heads and it turned out really well for the little that I knew. It wasn't too shabby for a 19 year old back in '92/'93 with little more than a PAW catalog, especially considering that that was before Al Gore invented the internet

I used a 270S Magnum in an otherwise stock 355 probably 10 years ago and that engine turned out to be a sweetheart. I put countless highway miles on that thing in a heavy 4x4. It didn't set any records but it was a real pleasure to drive.

Ahh, the glory days of lazy cams...

Sadly I did this back in my youth. I was building a motor with my dad and we were using thin new 9key timing set. Well, we did not pay close enough attention and did just that. Unfortunately we bent some valves and the rings never seated and were toast before we could correct the problem. That was a tough lesson as an excited kid and a dad too broke to start over with the build. That was 20 years ago and the short block still sits beside the numbers matching 68 vette.

This has been a fun thread to hear how much some of these "legendary" cams are lacking over the right cams.

How much they are lacking! that is funny...look at the XE line of cams that comp sells..the EX lobe is usually pulled from one of the old magnum cams.
Thing about the old high energy and magnum stuff is that they really like ported heads and some compression.
I currently run a 268H in my work truck 1947dodge..350 chevy ported by me 305 heads with 1.84-1.50 valves 10.4 compression
it runs 13.51 in the 1/4 mile( i will admit that is ground on a 106lsa)...I have ran the 270H in a 350 with 11.27+ compression and it ran 12.9's in a 78 nova.

the 280H magnum puts me in the 12.5's and the 292H in the 11.9"s 2200stall converter..could be better there.Both 10.4 compression..ported 305 heads
I did a 220" dragster with a mexican block 350 with the 305H and a 750 holley it ran best of 9.4 at 138 shift at 7500that was a cobbled mess of parts a buddy had,, 9:1 compression
low buck builds all 91 pump gas and every one very consistent.

I have ran the XE268H and i do not like it ..for the duration it has i expected more revs from it..I actually like the old 270H better.
I think it is more about combo.
Why do i run so many comp high energy and magnums,,I know what makes them work for me and I know what MPG i will get from them. The MPG is not too bad..

A bunch.
At least 20HP less then a modern design of the same duration.
You can also go with a shorter duration modern design, make th same power, and have better milage, and more torque.

Better mileage...that is an important part of todays mild builds for me..And longevity.
I have put over 100,000 miles on those comp cams with no lobe issues..most spring pressure on the seat for the 268-280 was 110 seat and 326 over the nose. a little less for the 268 ..Long happy life with good oil.
I seen your more modern 280 that is a bunch of lift for the duration...should make some nice power.Thumbs up on that one.

One we use a lot on SBC 350's for milage is our 204/208@.050" with .443"/449 Lift.
It'll make 350hp @5,200rpm, and we use a spring with 115# on the seat, and 280@ max lift.

What LSA? Just curious.

What kind of flow numbers and compression are you using to get 350hp? I'd love to hear more details on the combo.
