Glide ??

Postby k-star » Sat Jun 09, 2012 8:42 am

I had a customer call me this morning with a question about the glide in his car. I have never herd of this, he said that when he shifts to drive the trans acts like it is shifting in and out of gear. He said it's not really like the trans is slipping. He said it's almost like it going into tire shake. I did not build the trans so I am not sure what all is done to it. I do know that it is a stock GM case and has a stock pump in it. I also know it has the 7 disc clutch pack/drum in it.

This car is making a bit over 1000 hp with the plate on it and IMO the stock pump is not up to that task.

I wanted some insite from guys that built alot more glides then I do.

Any ideas?

I have never had one do that. I'd suspect it is about to have a serious failure, if it has not already.

He is way past the point where a stock case is a serious liability. I will not build a transmission for an application like his without either a Dedenbear or ATI case. It's not worth the risk.

Check the shift linkage first; both external adjustment and the internal "rooster comb". Do a quick line pressure test as well at the low servo cover port. Look for reasonably steady pressure and it should be at least 225 to around 250 with that combo. If all is well to this point, then it's time to open it up. Look at the front pump sealing rings and the bore in the drum where they ride for any issues. There are a few more things too that may contribute to that symptom. If you get in there and need help give me a shout. I'll be out today on our service department cycle ride; be back later in the afternoon.

Call Billy Landers Tuscumbia Alabama. Landers Racing he builds plenty of these and much more in anyway you need and stands behind his work. This man is the best. I know of a guy that runs in the grand national class who had 8000.00 in a 400 turbo transmission and it never would do what he needed. Billy built a 350 turbo for this guy for 1350.00 and this guy has been running the transmission every since with no problems! Says its the best he ever had and this guy runs nation wide. Regardless of what trans you need Billy can get it done

Here is some more information about this P/G, it does have a J&W bell on it, he pulled it apart to find everything was clean inside, steels/ clutches all looked good and the fluid was clean as well.

He said it came out hard on the trans brake, like normal and the minute he hit second, it was like someone was taking a jack hammer to things, it was loud and just shook, like tire shake.

He ran the car a few weeks ago and had no issues, consistant 8.5's and 1.2's in the 60, this time, the only thing he did differently was add 50 more to the nitrous shot.

He was thinking that either the seal on the forward drum was bad or the drum, itself had a crack in it???

It has been my experience that those aftermarket bellhousings just move the forces and the weak point to the area behind where the pump bolts in.

It sounds, from the description, that the addition of the extra nitrous has found the limit of what the clutch pack can hold with the capacity of the current clutches and steels, combined with the available line pressure.

It is however possible that there is some flex or twist now happening that could be causing intermittent pressure loss. Yes, there could be a hidden crack somewhere.

Check the input shaft, and the high gear clutch hub as well.
