Bilstein coilovers gas pressure

Postby OILEAKY » Fri May 04, 2012 8:33 pm

Just bought a used pair of Bilstein Coilover racing shocks with Schrader valve fittings. I understand that these are to keep the oil under pressure so that it doesn't foam. How much air (nitrogen?) pressure should I put in them ?

Check Bilstein or a dealer for the part number spec. 180psi or so is typical I think. Bilstein's charging gauge goes to 300psi.

P.S. - Missed your question mark. Yes, nitrogen. Not air.

Lots of tire shops keep a N2 tank these days. People like to fill their tires with nitrogen because its volume does not vary as much with temperature as regular old compressed air.

Definitely nitrogen. If you can find them there are bilstein tech papers flating around. As stated 175-180 is fine. I believe 125 is absolute minimum to supress cavitation in the damper. Increments should be 50psi. It has been prove. On shaker rigs +/-15psi doesnt make enough a difference to be concerned about. This info is from a Bilstein certified rebuilder.

Haven't talked to anyone at Bilstein in a long while. Rex Merritt was one of their tech reps for short ct. Don't know if he's still there since I heard he is conducting driving schools.

Everyone's responses to you are assuming they are Monotube's. Bilstein does also make twin-tubes, if they are twin-tubes the pressure is dramatically different. I suggest calling Bilstein with a part # and asking them directly.
