What is the bes 76 cc chamber GM head?

Postby MidgetMotorsports07 » Fri Mar 09, 2012 4:15 pm

We build quite a few engines that require a stock casting head. I usually use 441, 487, or 487X
those 3 are getting harder to find every year. I know the 993 casting is ok but they are pretty crack prone in my experience. 882's are plentiful, but I have heard the debate go both ways on how well they flow. I was just wondering if anyone has actually put these on a flow bench and tested them?

Thanks

Don't buy a head based solely on flow.

I am not really concerned with peak flow numbers, I am fairly certain that after about .480 lift you aren't really going go gain anythin. The combustion chambers are very similar and the plug location didnt really change. I was really just wondering if the 882s are worth trying. I understand what you are saying though.

Thanks

441, 487 & 993 are all decent heads, but the 487x is the better head.
thanks, jerry

there is no comparison between the others and the 882's for power. They just suck period and are thin castings as well.
I have found water by just cutting for a 1.6 exhaust with out trying to install hard seats.
Same deal going to a 2.02 valve as well

Meaning??? World Products heads flow like dog poo. Buy them not because they don't flow, but because they'll crack, cause your motor to blow, and force you to walk home. Bill Mitchell says we all need to walk more.

If you have all those 882 castings cryoed they will hold up to 500 hp and should last 2 seasons.
Its imperative that all the sharp edges on the deck surface( water, bolt holes and all) be rolled over!

I'm sure i can get away with running them if needed, but getting them to hold up when I cut the valves out and put seats in them is the problem.

My opinion is to stay away from the 882.
Stock for stock, I swapped the 882's for 487 casting on a L82-77 vette.
Car picked up 10-15 mph in the quarter mile and several mpg.
niether heads has 2.02 valves.
Let the vette restorers have the low po stuff.
