What would you build? (5.2 capacity limited)

Postby KustomCandy » Mon Feb 27, 2012 5:12 pm

I'm sitting here in a single room away from the family looking for employment. So to keep my head sane with some things to ponder, I thought I'd the question to you fine folk over the pond?

Strait up the motor is for a race boat (circuit), Prop propelled only.

Displacement is limited to 5.2 ltrs. Any name Automotive V8 allowed; Chev, ford, Chrysler(Dodge) etc.

carb/s (2x4 allowed)

Avgas allowed for Carbs.

Methanol allowed for Injection.

No supercharging allowed.

If I was to set a rule I would run with a SBC due to availability to parts and cost.

With that (limited list lol) what combo would you build?

How about breathing on one of the smaller LSx motors?

^------ That would be about the top of the list.

On a more frendly budget, I would build a 4.8L GM LSX engine out of the scrap yard. Use a L92 head or a LS7 head with smaller valves and a nice Mike Jones Solid Roller with as much CR as your fuel will tolerate (AV or Meth.).

A 4.8 LS engine bored to 3.9 , (use LS1 pistons) will get you closer to the 5.2 limit and will un-shroud the valves a bit. Keep your prop specs in mind when choosing heads and cam.

As is suggested, a 4.8. 07+ to get 243's already on it. There are carb intakes (dual plane, single plane, dual carb) available, run an MSD coil driver box if carbed, really simple to use.
Whats the competition like power/budget wise? Is this typically an all out thing?

Hey, since this was all theoretical, I figured I had an unlimited budget.

It is very ironic that CamKing picked this combo for a boat motor. Back about a decade or two, many of the winning "crackerbox" class of circle race boats had this very combination sans the 14 degree heads and the injection. These motors would make some power and had to turn big rpm owing to direct drive. Cool stuff for the time for sure.

Since my dad was one of the winningest circle track boat races of all time, it's not too ironic.

A ferrari 458! Bigger cams, valves, the most expensive crank you have ever seen. And direct meth injection. :p
900hp at 12000 rpm?
Oh wait only Donald trump could afford that......

Maby a Ford dohc or a northstar v8 throw the book at it injected. Bigtime flowbench work. Good combustion chamber clover type, ti valves massive lift for a 4v. Ti rods us billet crank. Lots of rpm

Really I like these best tho

Eventually I'm going to build one but with a 4v head on that block not for usac racing.
370hp 2.7l na :)

Huh! All this time I never put that together. My exposure to the circle boat deal was very limited for sure. As a kid I labored in the fiberglass shop that built the tooling for the WRAP "crackerbox" hulls for the guy that I understand still holds the Kilo record for that class. Through this association I met Warren Brownfield who helped me peak my interest in the engine building side of things. Spent some time watching the circle boats at Bakersfield and a couple of times at Burley Idaho when we ran a drag boat exhibition race there. Those K-boats were absolutely awesome to watch. At one point my personal v-drive flat bottom was a small block deal with very similar specs to what you show here. A rehashed old USAC spec injected sprint car deal with Brownfield heads. Ran good against the big blocks of the day. Little tough to get propped for big hole shot as it did not have the big grunt of a BBC. But since you could rev it to the moon.............and a B&M blower was a cheap add-on.............then the big inch motors became no issue with two people and full cooler on board. Fun times with a small block on the Kings river for sure.

Growing up, our family ski boat was an "SK" flat bottom.

Mike Jones,

I am heading to Lakeland Florida for an Inboard Race this weekend. I don't think there will be any SK but I think there will be some PS and SS Flats. I believe Duff Dailey is going, if you and your Dad were into Flats I'm sure you know him......

By the way, what cam would you put in this 14 degree head 9,200 rpm screamer????? :D
