Looking to build a low buck low rpm 454. Must run cast oem block and heads.9.5-1 compression max. Hydraulic Flat tappet cam that must have minimal lope and maximum .500 lift at the valve. 750 CFM carb and dual plane manifold. Going to run a set of 366 Oval Port truck heads. I guess my big questions here are what would be the best valve size to run? What kind of duration and lobe separation angle should I shoot for? Thanks in advance

Tractor Pulling. We will be running on a speed board at about 6-7 mph. So it will have to be able to maintain good mid range power (3500) but be able to open it up when needed. Thanks

Best money you could spend would be on a Scat 9000 cast steel 4.25" stroke crank. You should be able to buy it for under $300 and it would do wonders for your torque. Unless the cubic inches is a problem due to rules? Also with low compression 454 like that I would look at a cam around 220* @ .050" and put it on a 105* LSA

We have to be within stock cubic inches. Basically stock type motor just with cam,intake and carb changes.we are also allowed upright headers. So from what I understand with the cam I wanna go with a narrower LSA with a wide duration? How will that affect the idle? Also should I stick with 2.06/1.72 valves or go with soome thing bigger on either side? Thank again

I like the old 366 heads, but I'm not sure the port wall thickness is there for the rectangle port valve sizes. They will accept the normal truck valves (2.06/1.725) after you cut the seats. (1.84/1.66 or thereabouts is the stock truck valve size) The ones I've cc'd came in right around 101 cc's.

These heads had the 2.06/1.72 valves in it. I cut one intake to the 2.19 valve size. Looks like that will work nicely. Should I stick with the 1.72 exhaust valve? I thought about taking a 1.88 and trimming it to 1.800. Good, bad comments?

Anyone have any cam options for what im doing here? Max lift can be .500 at the valve.

Yes. On blacktop. depending on where I run I may have to stay under 3000 rpm for insurance reasons

3000 RPM in a big block puller? That is some strange stuff.
I have done just a bit of pulling engines. Do best with HP and TQ peak close together and the most rpms that can be run with the combo...

a 236 small port head would be your best choice in my opinion.

Ive started on these 366 truck heads. got the intakes cut for the 2.19 intake valves. Got the 1.72 valve on there way. Thinking of using gm part number 12353921. 276/280 adv 208/218 @.050 .475/.500 lift 112 LC Elgin and erson have very similar cam grinds all saying that they are strong low to mid range torgue. Another option I was thinking was a original L68 cam. 290/303 Adv 214/218@.050 .476/.496 Lift 115 LC from elgin. They are saying this is a good idle to 5500 rpm cam.
Our max rpm we can run is 5500 rpm but with the gear count I did the math and in low gear at 6 mph im only going to be turning it 2800 rpm untill the end of the track when tire start sliping and I can open it up a little more.
