Broken M22w, what to replace it with???

Postby vetrod62 » Fri Aug 12, 2011 10:58 pm

I broke my M22w transmission on the starting line. It has lasted 3 years with no problems, But I have made some mods to the engine to get more power out of it. Is there a stronger 4 speed, fast shifting, conventional shift transmission out there that can be street driven also. Basically a clutch and down shift-able unit?? 3300lb car w/driver, 4.30 gears, 10x26 slicks. thanks.

Jerico DR 4.4 and a McLeod Soft Lock. Guys are getting hundreds of passes out of that combination in similar cars. Yes, it will down shift. You just don't want the drag race shifter if you're going to down shift.

Sure, you could go Richmond, they even have a Super T-10 that is a bolt in provided you have a fine spline input and a 32 spline output.

But the Jerico will take 600HP+ in a 3400 pound car, shifted without the clutch, on slicks, leaving at 7000RPM.

Depends on the budget. Three years racing on a M22 is very good.
A new Super T10 is stronger than an M22 and at around $1600. may be enough.
The Jerico is better, no question, but at $4500. it's sticker shock for many racers.

Check out G-Force (GF-T5). 9310 nickel guts in a T-5 transmission. It's rated 600Hp/ 500 Ft. Lbs. They have a street version too....2500.00.They are in Penn.Just looked at their site... there's now a 3650 tranny with different adaptors!

Im the Newb on the site; we're the guys who have the Italian-made M22 parts, Muncie Supercase, iron midplate etc etc.

Sorry to hear you broke your 22W a few months ago. Was it an italian gearset or the other one? Italian gears would be marked Antonio Masiero or a pyramid-shaped 'A' over 'M' logo.

The Muncie was originally designed around the 2.20 1st and thats the strongest in a factory situation. Our case/midplate/Masiero gearset is definitely stronger than a T10 or ST10.

We did develop a stronger platform for dragracing called the M23; but I don't want to make a sales pitch as the Newb. Im here to learn more about high end applications to better serve my customers and to provide any help we can as a company for guys who use manual gearboxes.

To the OP: If its one of my transmissions and you still have it, contact me and lets make it right; unless you're pushing 800hp with a prostock suspension, we should be able to make you happy.

Hi Nate, the m22w I broke was one I built from a m21 7-8 years ago, I bought the gears (Masiero gearset ) , bearings and all other parts from you guys. Your company is the best. I deal with George. I do maybe 1-2 muncies a year for my car and the guys I race with. We have a solid axle (56-62) corvette sbc race series with about 12 cars in it. My car is a 1962, 3300 w/driver, stock suspension and slapper bars. 395 ci and about 550-600 HP.

I cleaned about 2/3s of the teeth off the first gear cluster. George said you were going to the modular set up soon, but I settled for the old style Masiero cluster, first gear a bunch of thrust washers and a sealed main shaft bearing. I also installed an iron mid-plate.

The transmission has been back together since September and is working well. I have not found a replacement transmission that will work for me at the track and on the street. My car "hits really hard" and has broken every piece of the drive train. I have over come those problems and the trans was last thing to break. I really do not want to break another one, so I have "bit the bullet" and softened up the rear.

How much stronger are the M23 transmissions?? Jim

PS, do you know where one could get parts for a ST-10 cast iron crash box?? A fellow racer in our series runs one and the slider teeth are getting really thin. Thanks

ST10 Parts:

Ed Hartnett 4 speeds Philly, PA 610-623-9381

Hoss' Gear Shop Pittsburgh PA 724-423-6502

A n D Transmissions (Don Pearson) Ohio 937-550-4472

Dave Reed Connecticut 203-265-6888

M23 has the wider 2nd and 3rd gears, and the stronger 1st gear (less helix than standard). Id say you're looking at 15-20% more strength at least.

What kind of clutch do you have? An adjustable clutch like those from ACT or Tim Hyatt will help a lot too.

If you want to send your unit in and have the M23 set installed, contact me directly and we'll work out the details.

I have been running a Ram 471 plate and a 1363 Disc for the last few years. It is a slipper, but I do not use it to slip in first gear. I am going to run the repaired M22w and see if it can hold up with the new power that broke it with the softened traction "bite".

No Worries there; our M23 has a much stronger 1st gear, if you decide you want/need that, I'll work with you to get it done as easy as pie.
