Heads for 434 SBC??
We have a 3100#, quarter mile only backhalved/ladder bra 1970 Camaro. We're running a 4800 stall with a transbrake 400, and 4.11 gears. For 4 years, I drove this car with an 11.5:1 flat-top 386 (destroked 400) with a mild solid roller. I ran 10.83@ 125 MPH with that combo. We now have a Little M based 434 small block with 14.5:1 compression and 278-288 @ .050" - .727" solid roller cut on a 109 LSA.
My question is about head choice. We used a set of 230 CC Dart Iron Eagles on the 386 with 64 Cc chambers and 2.08"-1.60" valves. We had 4.88's in the car then and I shifted at 7600 RPM's. The engine builder sells this complete 434 with AFR 227 heads on it and makes 695 HP with this combo and a single Dominator. We're not real concerned with the weight of the iron heads, but how much HP will they cost us? This is just a weekend play toy, and we're not looking to be the fastest out there. We're using a Weiand tunnel ram with 2 Predators and 1 3/4" open headers. I'd like to see 10 teens out of this thing. Should these iron heads be enough to get me there?
Thanks,
Frank

BigJoe,
I'm curious why the AFR 235 is a poor choice for that engine...care to expand a little?

Joe,
Thanks for the advice. I've followed your work for years. In your opinion, will the 230 Iron Eagles work OK for this combination? WE already have these heads that ate fresh from the machine shop. They have new valves, guides, seal, and valve job. So, we've got a set, ready to bolt on. I just don't want to let go of $1800-$1900 if I'm only going to see 10-15 HP. We're the "little guys" that just want fast play toys to have fun with.

He cant say anything about the AFR heads without a couple of trolls that go around looking for trouble start disputing everything he says. They have ruined many many threads on this site with there drama queen ways! Oh that AFR 235 is a great head, you must use shaft mount rockers so add in about another 1000 to 1200.00. That 434 will need all that head can deliver! Good luck, you will love it!BrazilianZ28Camaro wrote:bigjoe1 wrote:What ever else you do, DO NOT use the AFR 235 heads=If you do, you will sorry

Re: Heads for 434 SBC??
Both the AFR heads mentioned are very good. I see the major problem as being the but-plug header you have. Go to a 1.875 header with your same setup and a mild bowl job on the heads you have. You might make what you are looking for at the least cost. But those AFR's or any head doing 320+ cfm at .600-.650 and you probably will be happier. Good luck,
Joe

When someone spends a great deal of money for one of my engines, then they would put the results on the internet if they wanted everyone to know about it.

Joe doesn't exaggerate. How about 813 HP out of only 400 cubic inches!!

Re: Heads for 434 SBC??
Joe,
I pissed Tony Mamo off big-time a while back when I asked him to make a stock SBC head-bolt pattern head that had the new, (back then), LS- ports in it because to this day, it's the LS- head's ports and valve angles that make their great power and nothing else worth mentioning.
Tony has since come out with their high-zoot 23 degree head to probably counter what I'm talking about. BUTat a price, imho..
Please talk about this with all of us here IF you want to. Much appreciation if you do, but no big deal if you don't.
Thanks for any consideration.
