This combo of double hump 1.94 valve heads and cam with 8.5 to 1 comp in my buddy's camaro netted 8.13's in the 1/8th mile .That was with 3000 stall converter and 4.56 gear upping the compression to 12.5 to 1 netted 7.70's so I would suspect you would be right in the middle at about 8.0 flat 1/8tyh mile. That is a low 12 second 1/4 not bad for a driver.

I would like to get up above 400 hp. it must surely be possible with a few nice heads and good cam? does not feel like I want to keep my old heads .. then I might port them? yes Converter can I change the future. going to start with heads, intake, carburetor and a good cam for the combo. have you reached the great tips on what I'm looking for? To get as much as possible with what I was thinking to change ..

Yes the aftermarket heads will make more power and if in the budget go for it.I was just giving a recipe for the 400 horse level easy to beat with better heads.

Regardless of what you do to the motor, How will you know when you have 400 HP? Is this something to talk about with your friends? I really dont't know how much HP my motor makes, but I know what it takes to make it run 11 second quarter mile times. Build the motor for the performance you want and let the numbers you can't measure fall where may.
So much to do, so little time...

I want a fast street / crusing car. no ragracing. do you have any suggestions for stuff I can be described with the concept me out? it must surely be lots of people who have built a chevy small block with a great power in that has some good tips? =)

What are your goals for the car?Specific 1/4 mile time, street drivability(and by that I mean really driving it or just running 15 minutes to a cruise spot). Is mpg a concern? What fuel is available and economical? will the car need a/c in the summer ,will it have to idle in traffic for extended periods? What gear ratio and are you willing to change it? all these need to be answered to give an honest answer. We can give you a recipe for a 550hp brute you can't stand to drive for any length of time or a milder deal you could jump in and go 1000 miles at a time.Tell us your specific goals for the car and we can help better.

my goal is to drive on the street, a bit longer stretch sometimes. crusing in the evenings sometimes. what is the mpg? 98octan can I run on. It does not matter how much fuel it consumes. I need no ac. At crusing it can stand idle for a while. At 110 km/h it is 3000rpm with the gear I have now. would like to have some place in between:

"We Can give you a recipe for a 550hp brute you can not stand to drive for Any length of time or a deal Milder You Could jump in and go 1000 miles at a time."

as you wrote.

Street / crusing car with good power, it is my goal.

For what you are wanting I would go with vortec heads, 9.5 to 1 compression (If I'm correct your octane number is reasearch not motor ) performer Rpm dual plane intake.Keep your current converter and contact Mike Jones Known as Cam King on here to have a cam custom ground for your car.You will end up with plenty of power decent driving manners and have a lot of fun cruising the car.MPG is miles per gallon.

okay thanks for the reply =)'ve 10:1 in compression in my engine today, I'll go down to 9.5 to 1 instead? or should I choose heads with the same combustion chamber as the ones I have? someone special carburetor?

I want to play!!!
For starters i have not ran aftermarket heads on my drivers..I have ran afr's on a rail car....
I have turned many 11 second pases with just a bit more than what you have already....
#1 item of the day is TUNE...I notice you have the 270 comp cam..good cam..i ran one in a 78 nova with ported (by me) double humps 186 casting..they were just mild ported..228 cfm intake flow I think could be 225 and 195 exhaust cfm..intake runner measured 158cc...I milled the heads to 58cc chambers and ran a performer rpm intake...750 afb carb and a single point distributor with a fox body ford coil.It ran 12.94 in the 1/4 at 108mph..I had headers and 370 gears and a 400-600 rpm over stock converter...stock valves,,1.94-1.50
41 total timing and 93 octane....cast pistons stock 1969 block surfaced .025" off both sides and a .015" head gasket..I had .028 piston to head clearance and 245lbs of cranking pressure..It ran the same with a .038" gasket .....

I ran this same engine with ported factory iron intake and aQjet carb and ported exhaust manifolds and it ran 13.028 at 105mph....

I will agree with the poster who said 292H..we run one in another 78 nova with ported 601 casting (305 chevy ) heads with 1.94-1.50's and 10.4 compression 456 gears and a tall tunnelram with 2 600cfm edelbrocks...91 octane and 38 total timing
she runs 11.94 at 116 and some change ..the converter is a B&M 3000 hole shot that stalls to 2200...60 foot times are high 1.6's....still these are all factory block crank and rods with cast pistons ,,built loose....004" piston to wall or a bit more..

Tight engines with them old deep skirt pistons wont rev as well...

I know this is long...our latest is basically the same as the 11.94 engine ..but with a solid 252-252 at .050 and .536-.536 lift on a 106LS with a single plane and big single holley.. in a 76 chevy stepside .411 gears and 3600 summit stall and it does..same 601 heads i ported, but these are sportin 1.94" and 1.60" valves with double springs with dampener and larger than stock diameter...4" exhaust..because it sounds good with the 4'' borlas ......This truck runs circles around the little 78 nova.......

these are pump gas street vehicles....that will flat rock ..and twist to 7500rpm easily

I do not like the lower end heads like the performer rpm and the old dart 2's.. they aint any better than a ported set of factory iron...I would not waste my money.....and the big runner heads 200cc and up ..well they better flow some good air to make up for having a big runner...especially if they are going on a 350 mill...the above power plants are 350- 355ci

My old 350 chevy made a UK 420hp at 6,100 and 415tq at 4,600rpm with a 350 with STD size hyper flat tops, eagle rods, goodwrench block, hyd roller cam, 228/234 on 108, with 1.5/1.6 rockers, AFR 195, 64cc heads, 9.8:1 comp, RPM airgap intake, 750 Barry grant vac carb.

Fitted to a kit AC cobra 1200kg.

Nice quick car that done thousands of miles without a single oil leak at done 18mpg.

good times you had to in the cars =) interesting reading. but I did not understand the last thing you wrote:
about the runners.
Do you think it is better with big runners on a 355? it's what I meant.

I'm considering a couple brodix RaceRite. or a couple brodix ik200 heads, Holley 750 dp and a hydraulic roller cam for my engine.
