496 BBC BUILD
Every winter for the past 8 years I have the same customer who drops off his 496 for a "freshen-up".
Every winter I want him to try something different.
This year he say's he wants more HP.
He is considering changing the cam and heads along with a better intake.
His 496 engine currently.
Eagle 4340 rotating assembly.
SRP pistons with approx. 10.2 to 1 comp. ratio.
Howards cam with .620/.620 lift, dur. at .050 236/242,108 L/S.
Heads:Dart Iron Eagle 308 intake volume,2.25/1.88 valves,with a bowl blend,intake gasket match.
Intake: Edlebrock RPM with a 1 inch. spacer.
Carb: Quick Fuel flowed 850 DBL pumper.
Car 67 Chevelle with mini-tubs.
Weight approx. 3,600 lbs. with driver.
3.90 gear.
700 R4 with 3,200 stall.
Please keep in mind he is 67 years old and wants to run a hyd. roller cam and he want's to keep this on 92 pump gas.
Let's here your thoughts on what to change.
Thanks in advance.

Re: 496 BBC BUILD
why not give him something like a BB2 plus head, jump the cam to around a 240-245 and up the compression to around 11:1
other then the overdrive it should be fine, did he say what his cruise RPM is and if the converter has lockup or not?

I was no longer driving the car consciously. I was driving it by a kind of instinct, only I was in a different dimension.

What is the best performance, and what is the average times ??Is it race only, running real drag slicks ??

He did'nt say what cruise rpm is,It is a non-lock up converter.F1Fever wrote:why not give him something like a BB2 plus head, jump the cam to around a 240-245 and up the compression to around 11:1

He has a set of CNC ported AFR 315 cc he has for another build but I was afraid they might be a little big.

AFR 315 CC are not too big IMHO.new engine builder wrote:He did'nt say what cruise rpm is,It is a non-lock up converter.F1Fever wrote:why not give him something like a BB2 plus head, jump the cam to around a 240-245 and up the compression to around 11:1

With newer head designs from all the manufacturers, I've been going on the larger size (CC) and don't worry about it being a dog (drive-ability wise). The customer is also not stuck with a head that is too small if they want to build something bigger and faster later.
A few examples in similar cars to what your customer has.
A 496, 11:1 with as cast Dart pro-1 325's had good performance over a wide RPM range.
I compared that to a more econo minded 10:1 468 with iron World 269 ovals. The 496 had more seat of the pants grunt at lower RPM and just kicked but at higher RPM.
I posted recently on 210CC race ready AFR's on a roller cammed 355 SBC. Great throttle response and power over a wide RPM range as well.
Automotive Machining, cylinder head rebuilding, engine building. Can't seem to quit

You're killing me! 850 cfm on a 498 provides 1.7 cfm per cubic inch. A dead stock 350 SBC in 1970 with a four barrel delivered 2.14 cfm per cubic inch
If you want to stay with a 4150, you can go as big as pproximately 2.2 cfm per cubic inch and not really be pushing it, in my opinion. Remember, a dead stock 350 had 2.14!

Re: 496 BBC BUILD
It would be nice to know how much power is present "as-is" before making any changes up or down??
I would NOT recommend going any higher on the C.R. with "iron" heads and that relatively short cam. Also, what we've seen with much testing on these strokers, is they really don't "feel" all that decent with narrow L/S's. We would do these 489" "pump-gas/streeters" on 112/114 L/S's for sure! "Marine" cams so to speak!
We do a very high number of these type builds for 100% stock-appearing deals, mostly for the Chevelle's and the Vette's! (These use the Q-jet carbs and the "low-profile" C.I. intakes). These now make between 490 and 525 with oval ports and stock exhaust's.
The (hydraulic) roller platform adds approx 30 HP from the flat-tappet deal!
Thanks, Gary in N.Y.
P.S. We have a similar build to your's here with aluminum "Pro-Comp" heads, similar cam (but on H.R.), Comp 11-451-8, (230/236 x .550"-.550" x 112 LS) making 580 HP with a QFT-850, made 610 with an adapter and a 4500 Holley! Idles with 15"/16" vaccum with the 850.

Idles with 15" / 16" vauum, nice. Let me guess though, it was a 1050 Dominator?GOSFAST wrote: P.S. Re: 496 BBC BUILD
Your build is close to my EMC entry this year. My 496 had my cnc ported RHS CAST IRON heads on it with 11.2 compression ratio. It did not detonate. You might just touch up his heads or switch to the AFR he already has. You can go up in the cam size a little.

Re: 496 BBC BUILD
Brodix rr oval ports, decent single plane intake (a dual plane on a stroked bbc, really?), more carb, a yank ss4000 stall, 244 @ 50 on the cam for a hr. right at 250 for a sr. 112-114lsa for either. If you're bent on rectangle ports the afr 305 would be a good choice and budget friendly.
I'm with everyone else it would be worth the time to put it on the pump before and after to see exactly what and where you gained.

Re: 496 BBC BUILD
I would let that engine eat. The AFR 315 are perfect for a 496 give him a cam around at least in the .250 @ .050 range I would go .265 Dur @ .050 but thats just me. You are feeding a 496 and AFR 315 love lift dont be shy around .725 lift on a 112 ls get an Edelbrock Super victor intake.

3.90 gears, overdrive... don't forget..... this might be a cruisin' usa car...
