looking for 461 BBC cylinder head opinions

Post by bigblockwagon »

I have a 12 to 1 comp. 461 BBC (LS7) with iron GM 990 heads, professionally ported but no welding or filling has been done. Operating range will be 5500-7300. Current cam is a mild solid roller 6.88/692 and 269/276 @ .050 I'd like to use an aluminum head, and will also change the cam, but will probably limit lift to about .750 so for long valvetrain life. Heads I'm considering right now are AFR 315 CNC, BMF 310, and Pro-Filer 320, But I'm open to any and all comments and advice. I have a max budget of about $3500 for heads, so don't get too exotic.

Thanks, Scott

My vote is for the 315 AFR heads with the CNC'd combustion chamber.

Scott, you are looking in the right direction... keep the intake runner small on a 461! I really like the BMF stuff and think that you would be very happy with the 310 on your engine. Good luck, Dan

BMF 310cc is a very good choice.

Bmf seems to be pulling ahead in the informal opinion poll so far. Thanks everyone for the input.

These are both great heads & I think you could throw a blanket over the performance difference here
Personally I would look at what each costs & go from there
If I had to choose my vote would go to the AFR simply because I have seen how versatile this head is & the customer service is second to none.

I ran the BMF 310 on my 461 bbc with 13 to 1 compression and the same .050" duration cam. IN my 3400 lb Malibu, it ran a best of 9.43 @ 141 with a 1.289 60' footbraking. In the heat it would run 9.70's or so at 138.

Probably the best head in that size. I used a Vic jr intake with a 1000HP 4150 Holley.

Cam was a Bullet

269/276 @ .050
300/310 gross
.738/.710 lift
110 lsa, 108 icl

I would get a hold of Curtis at RFD. just give him you info and $$$ you want to spend. Tell him that you were recommended by Speedtalk forum. I'm sure it will be the best you can do. He'll more then likely give you some option on the cam or lead you in the right direction to get that too. 8)

That's one good running Malibu!! Probably the most compelling vote for the BMF so far.

Either one - the AFR or BMF.
Both are good heads and for the displacement and rpm range you specified, port size is very optimal for good velocity.

Hi Mike, :hello2:

I would have to argue with the performance. Just compare them.

Smaller runner 310BMF to a 315AFR
more over all flow
AFR / BMF

249 / 259 .300
312 / 325 .400
353 / 374 .500
380 / 386 .600
386 / 393 .700

BMF flowed with 4.310 bore
AFR Flowed with 4.600 bore

Look at how many mid to low 8sec 10.5 cars run them. Yes they cost more but look at what you get.
