Valvoline Lab Test Results
Flat tappet guys and others who desire extra zinc/phos anti-wear additives in their motor oil, may want to take a look at this. I just got a Staveley Lab report back on a brand new bottle of Valvoline conventional petroleum (dino) 10W40 4Stroke Motorcycle Oil. Check it out below:
In parts per million (ppm):
Calcium = 1849
Phosphorus = 1075
Zinc = 1154
Moly = 0
TBN = 7.1
For reference:
Calcium : Detergent/dispersant additive
Phosphorus: Anti-wear additive
Zinc : Anti-wear additive
Molybdenum: Anti-wear additive
TBN (Total Base Number): reserve alkalinity, which controls
acid formation as a result of the combustion process
You can get this Valvoline Motorcycle oil , also in 20W50 weight, at Kragen, Autozone and a few other auto parts stores.
-------------------------
For a comparison that I got from Staveley earlier in the year, take a look at their lab report on Royal Purple's $14.00 per quart, full synthetic, XPR Racing Oil
Calcium = 3039
Phosphorus = 1338
Zinc = 1421
Moly = 204
TBN = 10.9

Yep - I've got boxes of that stuff at the shop.Strange Magic wrote:If your looking for a very reliable zinc and phos additive that I would recommend the ZDDP by Kirban. It is sold in 4 oz bottles. This is the main company that distributes and wholesales additive to camshaft and valve train companys.

Re: Valvoline VR1
Does this mean that the Penzoil is a user friendly oil for flat tappet cams?veno wrote: If you want eh highest Zinc and phosphorous content in a shelf oil look no further then Pennzoil GT 25W50 this oil has 1800ppm phosphorours and 2000 zinc....

YES the GT 25W50 has the highest of any shelf oil... do not confuse it with 20W50... Only the Pennzoil GT oil has that zinc content... and its only available in 3 weights, 25W50, straight 50 and 60,
The VR1 has higher levels than the VV850 and is availale in straight 30,40,50,and 60 along with 10W30, and 10W40..ou812 wrote:Exactly why I use the vv850 valvoline...10w30!!black_z wrote:Shame it's so thick.

so why not use a fully formulated automotive oil Like VR1 verses a motorcycle oil made for wet clutch performance..

For all you guys that run Valvoline, when I worked at NAPA it was said that NAPA oil is Valvoline in a NAPA bottle. I know they are both made by the Ashland company but I can't say it they are the same exact oil. NAPA oil was always cheaper then Valvoline though so if they are the same you can save some money. Ofcourse Valvoline at Wal-Mart is probably cheaper than NAPA oil at NAPA.
Are you implying that the vv850 is for motorcycle clutches????veno wrote:The VR1 has higher levels than the VV850 and is availale in straight 30,40,50,and 60 along with 10W30, and 10W40..ou812 wrote:Exactly why I use the vv850 valvoline...10w30!!black_z wrote:Shame it's so thick.

You need to go to valvoline's website and check it out first...according to valvoline, this oil is quite a bit better than the VR1 for flattappet cams!
Email them....
