Using the correct dry wall helps. All new apartments around here are built with Densglass. It has fiberglass on the outside and is moisture and very fire resistant.

In the home garage I installed Pro-Rib steel roofing along bottom of walls in the area I work. Layed it so the ribs run horizontal and the panels are about 38" tall. That seems to be the area that takes the worst beating. They do good defecting sparks from welding and grinding and a person can clean that area with a pressure washer.

1/4" hard board or it used to be called masonite screwed over top the sheetrock prime and paint to match .smooth finish takes paint well cleans good. Leave screws exposed , with washers like trim screws in car interiors so you can replace it when it gets to beat up. Dan
