I'm looking for equipment to open a new shop, specializing in production cylinder head rebuilding. I'm in Columbia, SC, but will travel to pick up.

Need :

Seat and Guide machine (preferably VGS 20, will consider others)
Valve Grinder
Head and Block Surfacer
Pressure Tester
Cleaning equipment
Heating Oven
Cam journal align honing
Flywheel grinder
Block boring and honing equipment will be considered also

There is, or was, a guy close to you named Artie Hatfield, he handles engine rebuilding equipment. Haven't talked to Artie in a while, but I'd say he's probably the best guy to help you out, if you can find him.

Not sure what part of the country your in...
this is what i would do check out the local shops and see how their doing and see
if they need some help and then you can learn the ropes..
You would be surprise how many machine shops owners would be happy to get
someone working for them that would be intrested in buying the place.

Thanks for the input. That is sound advice. With that being said, I already own the property and building I want to locate the business in, and I'm paying for all the equipment, so operating overhead should be fairly small. I don't have to make a living out of it for at least 2 years, so I can start slow and regain experience. I have some machine shop experience, it's just been many years ago, lol.
I owned a small group of automotive repair shops until about 4 years ago when I sold out and took a few years off. I want to do something that is on a smaller scale, where I don't have to deal with employee headaches, (at one point I had over 40 employees).
