The Longest-Serving Congressman In History Wants To Abolish The Senate

Post by 1989TransAm » Wed Dec 05, 2018 11:36 am

While we are at it lets get rid of that pesky thing called the Constitution. /s

"A man who served Congress for more than 59 years says he could fix its broken systems by completely abolishing the Senate.
John D. Dingell, who represented Michigan from 1955 to 2015 ― the longest anyone has ever served in Congress in America ― said in The Atlantic that he can’t stand watching good bills pass a “hyper-partisan House” and then be stymied by the Senate, which is disproportionately weighted by congresspeople in small states.
“With my own eyes, I’ve watched in horror and increasing anger as that imbalance in power has become the primary cause of our national legislative paralysis,” he wrote in an excerpt from his book The Dean: The Best Seat in the House.
“Twice in the past 18 years, we’ve seen the loser of the popular vote become president through the Electoral College formula, which gives that same disproportionate weight to small states, each of which gets two automatic votes for its two senators.”

The issue is that the leader of the senate has too much power by saying what can be voted on. Any bill the house passes should be voted on period. The practice of Mitch McConnell controlling what gets voted on is stupid. He has more power than the president. In recent history many bills were never voted on, even when they had bipartisan support, simply because Mitch McConnell did not like the bill. Total BS Simple majority vote by the members should be enough to get a bill on the floor. Right now its a super majority to move a bill against the majority leader.

The majority leader is elected and can be removed.....so that means Mitch is doing exactly what the Rebups want him to do which is allow members to say they are in favor of a bill they know will never be law. The same thing happens in the house, and both parties do it.....its a lot like Gerrymandering.

Our country still survives to a large degree I believe, because of the snail pace its government moves at it, the public is often way too implosive, too emotional, uninformed , and often ultimately wrong in the big picture. Majority rules has a nice ring, but also has a down side.

Changing the current divided government system on a whim would be like altering evolution.

A better idea would be to abolish the demon rat party. And eliminate any political control over anyone's lives or property.

imo best thing would be to impose term limits on both the house and the senate. lifetime politicians have made a mess of things. something on the order of 2 terms for the senate, and 3 in the house.

I don't know about agreeing its the "best thing", but I sure would like to try it. However term limits would also need to include more restrictions, like a lifetime limit of combined federal government service , like say of 20? years, otherwise they will just hop scotch around, and a min 5 year restriction of post holding office lobbying.

It will never happen.

BINGO!!! Although no one can actually ask, it's my belief that "The Founders" of this country never envisioned ANYONE actually making a CAREER of serving in public office until they got to retirement age!!

Problem is, you'll play hell trying to find enough Congressmen and Senators to vote to end that practice with term limits!!
