General Motors will lay off 14,700 factory and white-collar workers in North America and put five plants up for possible closure as it restructures to cut costs and focus more on autonomous and electric vehicles.

The reduction includes 8,100 white-collar workers, some of whom will take buyouts and others who will be laid off. Most of the affected factories build cars that won’t be sold in the U.S. after next year. They could close or they could get different vehicles to build. They will be part of contract talks with the United Auto Workers union next year.

Plants without products include assembly plants in Detroit; Lordstown, Ohio; and Oshawa, Ontario. Also affected are transmission factories in Warren, Michigan, as well as Baltimore.

About 6,000 factory workers could lose jobs in the U.S. and Canada, although some could transfer to truck plants.

I believe that one of the plants closing builds the chevy volt extended range hybrid. Which I have driven a couple and is a great running car.

Wall street loves layoffs.

GM is setting themselves up for an economic slowdown. Looks like they learned lessons from the great recession.

No doubt.

The other big driver is steel/aluminum tariffs and new cafe standards. The margin is low cars and very low on small cars, but the sales were needed to meet cafe standards so the companies made them.

The new tariffs make the already poor numbers upside down and the new lower cafe numbers means the low profit sales have no strategic value...so close the plants and hand the business to foriegn companies. Go Rump!

I have no doubt that GM can make more money for its share holders by doing what they are doing. But sometimes we have to understand that we need decent paying jobs, everybody says it, but no companies seem to want to step up and provide them. They want to bust unions, reduce wages, etc. The long term view should be who is going to buy our products when everyone is broke working for minimum wage? We keep wages low in the countries producing the products, we are destroying the middle class, leaving only working poor. If you want a booming economy and pay off the deficit don't give rich people tax breaks, give poor people jobs that they can pay income taxes, and buy stuff. Plus the people by way of the government bailed out GM, the Banks, etc. and they repay the American people by leaving the country? Trump is good at bringing attention to issues by ranting and raving, why isn't he calling GM low IQ and threating to tell all republicans not to buy GM products? a couple bad months in sales, and some protests at GM dealers, may convince GM that what they are doing is not really in the companies best interest. Why isn't Trump at least trying to fulfill his campaign promise of bringing and keeping those good jobs?

I think the margin is the same, its just that vehicles are sold, "by the pound"!!

So the $Dollar volume isn't there is all.

Oh and btw, GM sold every fu*king small car they ever made/rebadged so the market is there!

No.

Trucks in the US are protected by a 20% tariff, that's pure profit for us truck manufacturers that isn't available on car sales.
