The Trump effect: GM to layoff nearly 15,000 workers in North America

General Motors will lay off 14,700 factory and white-collar workers in North America and put five plants up for possible closure as it restructures to cut costs and focus more on autonomous and electric vehicles.

The reduction includes 8,100 white-collar workers, some of whom will take buyouts and others who will be laid off. Most of the affected factories build cars that won’t be sold in the U.S. after next year. They could close or they could get different vehicles to build. They will be part of contract talks with the United Auto Workers union next year.

Plants without products include assembly plants in Detroit; Lordstown, Ohio; and Oshawa, Ontario. Also affected are transmission factories in Warren, Michigan, as well as Baltimore.

About 6,000 factory workers could lose jobs in the U.S. and Canada, although some could transfer to truck plants.

It seems to me that not to long ago that your messiah Obama used the government to bail out GM. AKA tax payer dollars. He also gave into the union demands.

GM is making money, they just want to focus on doing so with fewer employees and factories so they make more profit.... because contrary to what you may have been told business don't hire or invest because of tax cuts, they do it when the return justifies the spending. US companies are no longer profitable in the auto market and are living off tariffs (another word for tax payer funded subsidies) in the truck sector.

Both Ryan and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) pointed out that GM received a large tax break from the bill Republicans passed last December, but still opted to open a new SUV plant in Mexico rather than the United States. “The workers at Lordstown are the best at what they do, and it’s clear once again that GM doesn’t respect them,” wrote Brown. “Ohio taxpayers rescued GM, and it’s shameful that the company is now abandoning the Mahoning Valley and laying off workers right before the holidays.”

Moron. President Trump is using them to try and level the playing field. Countries are charging much higher tariffs on our goods imported into their countries.

I wondered how long it would take for the sheep to squeal with joy....and blame Orangemanbad

A few minutes,, not bad

The union here in Oshawa is OUTRAGED, they are claiming GM WILL NOT shut down "their" plant...ya, they are calling it "their" plant

The union walked out today on advice from the union and are threatening job action..they were picketing at the plant gates today preventing office workers from leaving...400 of which are also losing jobs 🙄

The party is over for the unions here...at one point years ago Oshawa was the biggest auto plant in the world that employed over 40,000.00 people. It's been declining ever since..due to automation and efficiencies

So why the surprise and shock? They only have 2500 employees now, down from 40,000.00 in a steady decline....did they really think the downsizing would stop right at 2500? Bwahahaha

F'n clowns ....these assembly line workers here make big money, fantastic benefits, great working conditions, profit sharing and a gold plated pension plan..for doing assembly line work that is no different that some schmuck does for GM in Mexico for $2.00 and HOUR! No perks either

But the union memebership here is of the mentality that they are worth 80 or a 100k , because ...we'll just because.

They had a good run, now they have to wake up and realize their education, work experiences and skills are suited for minimum wage

From a guy who doesn't even realize when you invest in ANYTHING to do with the markets, you are effectively an investor in the auto industry

When they do good , you do good...a well run effiecient operating auto plant has paid you dividends...your just too blind to know it.

The spin off industries that sub out , the suppliers, the contract workers etc , will all be affected if a they do not stay profitable and reinvest .

Believe it or not...that's a good thing.

Good for GM thinking ahead this time...
