Buckle up, America. Gas prices have a hit a level not seen in three years and are expected to continue their upward trajectory.

The national average for a gallon of gas reached $2.82 this week, a level not seen since summer 2015, according to online gas station database GasBuddy.com.

Californians are paying the most: $3.61 per gallon. By contrast, Oklahoma has the lowest state average, at about $2.50.

While gas prices typically head higher every spring due to increased driving demand, the current average is 48 cents more per gallon — an increase of about 20.5 percent — than the $2.34 consumers paid a year ago before prices inched downward. For most of summer 2017, the average price hovered around $2.30 or trended lower.

The summer months will likely bring even higher prices.

"While it won't cost motorists as much as it did during 2011 to 2014 [when national averages ran $3 to $4], it will cost them millions more every day versus last year," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com.

Supply and demand. Opec and Russia have cut back on production. When the Keystone pipeline comes on line we will be close to energy independence.

Don't worry, I'm sure Trump will be going after OPEC soon enough. He's only been talking about that "cartel" since the 80s but it's a nice shiny object for the trolls to freak out over even though they tend to forget history.

The pipe line and a whole lot of US production only makes sense when oil is above about $70/barrel. So, the oil independance for the US requires that price point.

Up until now most US policy focused on low cost oil and this also works to keep Rusdia weak so a win-win.

Now the policy has shifted to letting Russia regain strength in the ME, and along with that drive up oil prices.

The other thing the oil over about $70/barrel do is make coal power plants more practical and solar make the most sense.....unless you slap big tariffs on solar to shut it down.

This whole is the Rump administration litterally working to the benefit of Russia and ME nations while asking US consumers to pick up the tab, and no doubt also includes a whole lot of money fkowing into Rump and friends pockets.

Review the meaning of the word "consensus", then "compromise" and get back to us.
Anybody who thinks they have exclusive ability to solve this nations problems. might be one of them, IMO.

The higher gas prices are sure to erase the small gains from the Trump tax scam of 2017.

Probably not.

The oil companies make huge profits when the prices are up and that usually is the driver. High oil price usually push the Dow up not drive it down.

So how come there are no demo c rats volunteering to send more tax money in at the end of the year? If we or they wish to call this a demon o cracy then they should love my idea that all voters get exactly what they vote for. So if say the demo's vote for high taxes they get to pay them. And who votes for low or no taxes is not affected by the higher taxes. This would be fair and when it comes to taxes the demo's would get what they want.
