No law has ever prevented unwanted behavior. Only physical restraint can accomplish that. At best law
enforcement can seek to apprehend and punish a law breaker after the fact.

We agree. except for the "at best" part, for example just rescinding Prohibition (unpopular "unwanted behavior" control) made a lot of people a lot less criminal.
so if we dont have laws, no one is a criminal, and everyone is happy right?!!

Even a libertarian doesn't see it that way.

The issue David and I were bouncing around was regarding "harm", and the use of preemption to prevent that (possible) harm, there is a recent movie and a TV series based on these lines of thought.

Back ground checks have never been shown to make any difference at all. They are at best "feel good" efforts.
Bad guys will not risk submitting to a background check; they will steal weapons or acquire them on the black market.
The black market is not a gun show. Try to buy a gun at a gun show and see what happens.

Now out in the parking lot, it's another matter entirely. A reputable gun dealer keeps his reputation clean.
Even if the transaction is not quite legal, the dealer must know you and trust you or he will not sell to you.

So...
background checks are hopelessly ineffective and useless,
magazine capacity restrictions have no value,
banishment of semi-auto rifles based on their cosmetics is pure silliness,
there is no way to identify temporary insanity and emotional instability,
laws will not prevent teen age suicides,
gangs will still protect their turf just as politician do every day.

"and everyone is happy right?!!" Wrong.

I did not say that, nor did I imply it, and making a case for NO laws is not worth discussing.
History is replete with laws that were very painful and unproductive for society, and their rescinding improved the general lot of society, IMO.
Do not put words in my mouth, my foot is often already there, except for this time.
