Wanted BB Chevy Block

Post by Adger Smith »

I'm looking for a BB 2 bolt main block for an early production '67 Chevy Biscayne a friend is restoring. It was his Dads and we suspect it has had a replacement short block because the heads have the correct date codes and part numbers as well as the intake.
The research we have done tells us it should be a 2 bolt 427 block:
Casting Number ending in: 351
Date codes:
I 26 6 (preferred)
I 27 6
I 28 6
I 29 6
I 30 6
J 3 6
That week of production will put it in the right sequence with the heads.
If any of you guys have a block laying around I would like to buy it.
Yes, I've found a couple on line, but I don't want to be robbed by the Vette guys.
We are not looking at this as an investment in a Vette.
It is just his Daddy's old car we banged around in in High School and had some great times.
If any of you guys have a block like this that I could re do drop me a line.

Just randomly, a 396" engine came in last week with a J106 casting date code.

Good Date code, but it will probably have another number on the bell housing flange above the oil filter tan the xxxxxx351 we need. If it has the 351 let me know. Thanks.

Nope, ours is definitely a 396" and not your 351 casting number.

Thanks, Jack. I never believed this was such a "Hard find" also the Vette guys are nuts at what they want for these blocks.
Would you pay $6,500 for one that had 8 sleeves in it? Damn, my buddies old beater Biscayne isn't worth that as a complete car!!!

For true, Adger. When we start playing that number-matching/casting-date-code-matching game, the costs get crazy.

Back to the beginning, why on an old beater Biscayne do we need a concours-date-coded block?

I really don't, I just thought it would be neat to do it back original so he could say it is. Just for the expense of "Saying So" it looks like I might have to step back on this one and fix the 396 short block that is in it. We sure had some fun in that ride.. You could hold about 10 cases of beer iced down in the trunk & still carry 6 in comfort, maybe 8 if the gals sat on laps!! I have even found an old 8 track Pioneer tape deck like it had in it, too!! we had the rear window wedge speakers on long leads where we could put them on top of the car and have music outside... It is just a good memory thing, Jack...Part of gettin old, I guess.

Jack, just out of curiosity what is the block casting # on your 396? Those date codes could work.
