Any thoughts on wether to stress relieve 4130n or not? The question only pertains to 4130n used in the cage area.

4130 Stress Relieving

Post by CoMaxRacing »

I have discussed this with a lot of chassis builders,(also my profession) and I have found that all of them feel that the extra effort to stress relieve each weld individually is not worth it. If you put the minumum amount of heat into the weld to do it properly, stress will be kept to a minimum. I am researching doing an entire chassis after it comes off the jig. Basically put them into a big oven and bake them.

Just my 2 cents

You may want to look into the vibratory stress relief process. Metalax is one of the brand names. It worked for me.

On dynamically stressed Motorcycle frames made out of 4130 its less of a question of stressrelieving the parts in an oven. What is really very crucial though is that the tubes need to be "perfectly" notched (milling machine) in order to have almost nil welding gap, thus in order to avoid high innertensions of the weld that transmit into the neighbouring thinner area, where they usually break if done non properly.
You might also want to try sif bronze welding thus the bronze will take the damping of the joints and will allow lower weld tensions. And its at least as strong, i would assume, if done correctly.

cheers

Sil Bronze ?

Type of TIG/Gas welding rod.

Most chassis guys i know use mild steel rod for welding chromolly as it has a lower melting temp.

ER70-S2 is the most common rod I have seen.
